Accept an alliance to gain various benefits with foreign settlements in Civilization VII (Civ 7). See why you should accept an alliance on this page, how to maintain one, and all the benefits of alliances.
List of Contents

Accepting alliances provides generally favorable benefits during your run. One advantage of aligning with another leader is gaining open access to their territories, eliminating the need to spend influence on opening borders.

Forming an alliance with other leaders can also give you a numbers advantage in wars. Your allies will send additional military forces to help you fend off hostilities from your enemies.
Conversely, if your allies declare war on other leaders, you'll have to side with them to maintain the alliance. Staying neutral in their conflicts will break the alliance.

Establishing Trade Routes with an alliance is much easier since you don’t need to use influence points to open borders. You’ll have easy access to their settlements and can initiate trade routes to gain more resources.

Some Leadership Attributes, such as those in the Economic Attributes, allow you to gain more gold for every alliance you have. If you have any of these Attributes unlocked, make sure to form as many alliances as possible.
Leaders List and All Abilities

Some social policies also rely on alliances. If you have any of these policies active, be sure to keep making alliances to maximize their benefits.

As mentioned, having an alliance means you'll also share the same enemies. If your allies declare war, you’ll have no choice but to join them to keep your connections intact. However, if you're not really ready for war, it's best to decline the alliance or stay neutral to break it off.

If you have other plans that don’t require foreign involvement, it’s best to decline alliances so you can focus on them, especially if you're working toward completing a legacy path.

As mentioned, to maintain an alliance, you must also fight alongside them during their conflicts. This is the downside of having too many allies, as they may end up fighting each other, leading to the possibility of having too many enemies as well.

You can maintain good relationships with leaders by using positive diplomatic actions such as Send Aid, Improve Trade Relations, Research Collaboration, and Local Festival. Sanctions are automatically blocked if you're in an alliance, but all espionage actions remain available.

If you continue building settlements near their borders, alliances may end as this impacts relationships.

Unhappy settlements ruled by other leaders may sometimes revolt and attempt to come under your rule. If their original leader has an alliance with you, accepting these defectors will automatically end the alliance.
