Civ7 - How to Build Roads

Build roads by establishing new settlements or creating trade routes in Civilization VII (Civ 7). Learn how to make roads and see all possible ways to build new ones.

Make New Nearby Settlements

Making New Settlement

To build roads, simply establish a new settlement about five tiles away from the city or town you want to connect. Once the new town is built, roads will automatically connect the two settlements as long as there are no obstacles in between.

When to Build More Settlements

Roads Will Not Appear on Difficult Terrains

No Roads

Some common obstacles that can prevent your town from being connected include rivers, mountains, and independent settlements. If you want roads established between your settlements, make sure to choose a location where all tiles in between are flat.

Settle No More Than 10 Tiles Away

Build Roads

Settlements established more than ten tiles away will not connect to city or town. It's best to settle nearby to ensure roads are built to link your settlements.

Make Trade Routes with Merchants

Trade Route Road

If you want to build roads with foreign settlements, establishing trade routes is the only way. Simply send a merchant to any leader’s settlement to open up trades. Just make sure it's within trade range!

Replaced by Railroads in the Modern Age

Railroad

In the Modern Age, most roads, including trade routes, will be replaced by railroads. You can take advantage of these railroads to fast travel units without using up turns.
