A guide to all the new ages in Civilization VII (Civ 7). See the new ages system, an explanation of each age, and what carries over to new ages here.
The new Ages system in Civ 7 represents periods of advancement for each civilization you control. There are a total of three ages, and any chosen leader will remain throughout all of them while civilizations change every age, a new feature.
Ages serve as chapters that allow players to evolve their buildings, gain new types of units, and earn bonuses for a more immersive experience.
Ages were first introduced as a new feature in the Civ 6: Rise and Fall expansion. They return in Civ 7 as an introductory feature, with a much more fleshed-out system compared to the previous one!
Civ 7 Gameplay Changes and New Features
Antiquity Age is the starting age for all civilizations. It represents the agricultural age of your civilization transitioning into a more urbanized society.
Exploration Age, as the name implies, is a new age where you start exploring new territories for rare commodities or other resources, and establishing settlements in distant lands.
This is also the first age where you'll first see the changes to your civ, such as the evolution of buildings, new civics, and technologies. You'll also be able to craft ships from this point in the game!
Modern Age serves as the final age for your civilization. From this point, your civilization will be the most advanced, with new technologies available. Global conflicts will also arise, and how you navigate them will be up to your playstyle!
Leaders you start with will remain throughout each age transition. Relationships formed by your leader and their attributes will also carry over to the next age, allowing you to continue your story with your chosen leader.
Ageless Buildings will serve as monuments and will not evolve during age transitions. Other buildings, however, will continue to change as you enter a new age.
Civ 7 Buildings and Improvements
Commanders are also retained during all age transitions, making them a valuable investment. All their attributes, experience, and levels will not reset and will prove to be extremely useful in the long run.
Traditions chosen from previous ages will also carry over to new ages. Social policies can be used in all available ages, and how you set them will be entirely up to you and the leader of your choice.
Ages will transition with every crisis you navigate. This is a new system implemented, mandatory for each age to be completed before transitioning to a new age!
Crisis Policies are also introduced at this point, much different from social policies. These policies are negative in contrast to social policies and are one of the things you need to carefully set as you face the crisis.
After navigating a crisis, you'll move to a new age and get to pick a new civilization. This choice will depend on the connections you made in the previous age, historical background, and geographical standing. All choices aren't randomized and will depend on these factors.
Civ 7 List of All Civs (Civilizations)
Some leaders will always have a civilization unlocked for them. For example, Himiko will always have the Meiji civilization available upon reaching the Modern Age!
You can still opt for another civilization, especially if you want to see possible outcomes with other presented options!
Legacy Path also plays a huge role in the future of your civilzation in the new age. If you complete the milestones in the Legacy Path, you'll be able to enter the next era as the Golden Age. Failing to do so, forces you to enter the next one as the Dark Age.
Regardless of which type of age you unlock, you'll need to spend your legacy points. You can choose from a variety of legacies, such as new attributes for your leaders, geographical options like Change Capital where you can change your capital for free, or more expensive ones that are only accessible behind the Golden Age!
