Civilizations Explained

Your Civ Changes When You Advance to the Next Age

Unlike previous Civilization games, the civs in Civ 7 are no longer static and become another civilization as you advance to the next Age.

This happens when you fulfill one of the unlock requirements as you progress through the game. These include the following criteria:

  • Playing as a precursor civ always unlocks the succeeding civ. For example, playing as Rome in the Antiquity Age automatically unlocks Norman and Spain in the Exploration Age and America, French Empire, and Prussia in the Modern Age.
  • Playing as a particular leader. Choosing Isabella as your leader lets you unlock Spain in the Exploration Age and Mexico in the Modern Age.
  • Fulfilling unique unlock requirements. If you build 5 Walls in the Antiquity Age, you can unlock and evolve your Antiquity Age civ into the Norman civilization in the Exploration Age.

Civs Are Locked to a Predetermined Age

In previous games, it is possible to play as Rome or Egypt well into the Renaissance or Modern age. It is no longer the case in Civ 7 as civs are now locked to a predetermined age.

This means you can only play as Greece in the Antiquity Age, Mongolia in the Exploration Age, and Prussia in Modern Age among others.

All Civs Have Unique Abilities, Units, Infrastructure, and Civics

Civilizations have unique abilities, units, infranstructure, and civics. You can then choose a Leader with a Leader Bonus and Leader Agenda that synergizes well with civ's unique abilities to get the victory condition that you want to achieve.

In addition, all civs have an associated Wonder that you can unlock early on, giving you the advantage to build them before the other players.
