This is a guide on how to win Wars in Civilization VII (Civ 7). Check out what you need to do to beat your opponents in battle and how to better prepare yourself for war.
List of Contents

Before you go off warring with other Civilizations, you want to make sure that you're fully prepared first. Make sure you have enough Units to take down your opponent's armies, as well as some more Units back home in case the enemy invades you from behind.
At the same time, even if you're not planning on starting wars, it's still a good idea to have a standing army to defend your territory in case of a surprise attack.

Regardless if you plan to go to war or not, you still want to have enough Commanders trained up to support your army. They're the most important Military Unit in the game, and you don't want to fight wars without them since they can buff all of your Units.
Another great thing about having multiple Commanders is that the more you have, the more Units carry over to the next Age, allowing you to focus on infrastructure rather than defenses.

The first thing you need to win wars is to learn how to beat your opponents in combat. Depending on the Leader, Civilization, and Units you have, you'll have to fight battles differently so make sure you study up on how to best best command your forces.

One big downside of war is that your Settlements will become unhappy due to War Weariness and Unrest, and your Gold per turn will be drained the larger your army gets. As a rule of thumb, make sure you always have high Happiness and Gold so you don't struggle during wartime.

If you're struggling to defeat enemy Units, then you may need some assistance from Military-based Wonders. Their effects can range from ones that help you scale, like the Terracotta Army granting more Experience, or immediate effects that are always useful, like the Gate of All Nations' +2 War Support.
The most important part about building these Wonders is that only one person can get them, so make sure to build them and get their bonuses before your opponents can.

Each Civilization will have their own Unique Units that give certain advantages in combat when compared to other Units. It's best that your army is primarily built of these Units since, combat-wise, they'll perform better than the regular Units available to everyone.
Just remember to read what they do so that you can utilize them effectively and gain an edge over your opponents in combat.

Another important resource during Wars is your Influence since it allows you to purchase War Supply. Whenever you can, use whatever Influence you can spare to get more supply since it strengthens your army while simultaneously weakening the enemy's.
Do note, however, that if you're fighting multiple wars at the same time, you'll need to purchase War Supply for each foe that you're facing.

Aside from using Influence for War Supply, you should spend some of it building a positive relationship with other leaders to start an Alliance with them. This way, you can have someone to help you during War, forcing the enemy to split their forces up.
Although, you shouldn't spend all of your Influence building Alliances since you still need some for other aspects of the game like countering Denounciantions and the aforementioned War Supply.
If you're a Suzerain of a City-State, they will also go to War alongside you. If you need even more assistance and safety for the future, look to become Suzerain of City-States near you so that you have a buffer between you and invading forces.

If you plan on starting a War with someone, you should only declare Formal Wars once their relationship level is Hostile. If you choose to do a Surprise War instead, your opponent will gain War Supply and a bunch of Influence, putting you on the back foot right away.
When planning to start a War, make sure you Denounce the enemy first so that their relationship will drop low enough for you to declare a Formal War.

One thing to note is that every Leader has an Agenda, which tells you what they like and dislike. If you don't want to use Influence to denounce someone, just check their Agenda and play towards what they dislike so they become Hostile naturally.
