Upgrade units in Civilization VII (Civ 7) by spending gold to promote them to the next tier, if it has been researched. Read on to find out how to upgrade your units and how they will affect your military strategy
List of Contents

You can upgrade your units if you have unlocked a higher tier unit of the same type via Technology.
For example, you can upgrade your Swordsman to Spearmen when you finished researching Bronze Working.
Additionally, you cannot produce lower tier units when you unlocked their higher tier. However, you can still buy civ-unique units when they upgrade. They will have buffed stats.
Upgrading a unit will not reset its HP. It will take its turn to transform to its next tier. This means it will not be able to move, attack, or heal after upgrading.
Its best to upgrade a unit when it is out of combat and within your settlements' borders.

At the beginning of the next Age, your army will reset. You will recieve at least one unit per settlement, a commander with a packed army, and a ship or navel fleet. All of them will be Tier 1 units of the current Age.

Commanders earn experience when nearby units engage in battle. After collecting enough experience, they can be promoted. This will let them gain an ability from 1 of 5 Promotion Trees.
Unlike other units, a commander will carry over any promotions from the previous Age.
