This is a guide on how to do ground-based combat in Civilization VII (Civ 7). Check out some tips to become better at combat on land so you can easily defeat your enemies.
List of Contents

The biggest advantage you have against the AI is that you can play around your Commanders and their Command Radius better than them, making your armies much more effective in battle. They're the backbone of your military and they provide powerful buffs that let you overwhelm your opponents.
Make sure to protect them so that they don't die. Remember, you can always replace your Units, but you can't replace a high-level Commander.
Subsequently, you'll also want to prioritize eliminating enemy Commanders when possible. This will weaken the enemy forces significantly, making it much easier to defeat them.

Aside from positioning around your Commanders, you'll want to organize your army in a way that your Ranged Units are protected, and your Cavalry has room to maneuver.
As a general guide, have your Infantry in the front with your Ranged Units behind them. Just make sure to also leave enough gaps so your Cavalry can rush in and pick off any weak or vulnerable Units on the enemy's side.

Another thing to note is that Ranged Units won't be able to see over tiles that tower over them. To prevent this, either make sure that they have a clear line of sight, or they're elevated on a hill, so that they can see their targets.

One important thing to note is that you will get Combat Bonuses when attacking and defending on certain terrain types. Make sure that you position your army in hills or vegetated tiles so that you gain the combat advantage instead of your opponents.

If you're on the defensive, remember that you can always build temporary fortifications to reduce damage and hold a point. Remember that the enemy can take over fortifications, so make sure not to leave any low HP units exposed.

At some point, you'll have Units that will start to get low on HP. Make sure to have them fall back, and replace them with fresh Units so that they can heal up and come back to fight later on.

Depending on the Civilization that you're playing, their Units may receive exclusive bonuses that make them stronger in certain aspects. Make sure to read your Units and the bonuses they can get, either from Techs or Civics, so you know how best to utilize them.
Some examples of these are America's Marines being able to ambush from waters thanks to Amphibious, or Persia's Immortals healing whenever they kill a Unit.
Do note, however, that some bonuses are locked behind the Tech or Civic trees. Take Flanking for example, which is locked behind Military Training, or Maurya's Units being able to heal when next to Purabhettarahs, which is locked behind Ayurveda.
