Multiplayer is back in Civilization VII (Civ 7). Learn everything you need to know about multiplayer in Civ 7, including how to play, available features, cross-play support, multiplayer player limit, if you can play in teams in multiplayer, and whether hotseat multiplayer is available.

Hotseat multiplayer is a local multiplayer mode that allows more than one human player to participate and take turns in the same match using the same hardware.
It has been teased to be released at a future update, but, as of now, it is currently unsupported.

To access multiplayer mode, players will need to log in to their 2K account first. Having an account is mandatory, so make sure to log in or create one if you don’t have one.
To play multiplayer in Civilization 7 on Xbox, PlayStation, or Nintendo Switch, you'll need an active online subscription for your platform.
On Xbox, this means you need to have either the Xbox Game Pass Core or Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. PlayStation players will need a PlayStation Plus subscription, while Nintendo Switch users need to have a Nintendo Switch Online subscription.
Now that you have a 2K account, you're ready to play Multiplayer. Here's how you can create your own lobby where other players can join you.

| 2 | ![]() From here, you can choose what mode you want to play in—Internet or LAN. |

General Settings ・Rule Set: Standard Rules ・Age: Antiquity / Exploration / Modern ・Game Name ・Private Game ・Kick Vote ・Turn Timer: None / Standard / Dynamic ・Difficulty: Scribe / Governor / Viceroy / Sovereign / Immortal / Deity ・Game Speed: Online / Quick / Standard / Epic / Marathon Map Specific Settings ・Map Type: Continents Plus / Continents / Archipelago / Fractal / Shuffle / Terra Incognita ・Map Size: Tiny / Small / Standard Advanced Settings ・No Age Transitions ・Mementos ・Age Length: Abbreviated / Long / Standard ・Disaster Intensity: Catastrophic / Light / Moderate ・Crises ・Game Random Seed ・Map Random Seed You can also go to the “Additional Content” tab on the lower left corner of the screen to disable any additional content available to the game. |

| 6 | ![]() In the next screen, you can choose which civ and leader you want. Just below your name, you'll find player slots. You can open or close each slot as needed, and if you prefer, you can fill some slots with AI opponents. In the upper left corner of the screen is the Join Code, which you can share to your friends so they can join the game you're hosting. Finally, you can select your Mementos in the lower right corner of your screen before starting the game. |
If you don't want to host your own game, you can always just join an active lobby.

| 3 | ![]() In the next screen, you'll find a list of games you can join. Simply click on a lobby that you want to join. If you weren't able to get in, try joining another lobby until you find one that lets you in. |

With crossplay enabled, players across different platforms will be able to play against each other. However, do note that Switch players will have game size restrictions applied and will not be able to access every multiplayer lobby online.
Civ 7 All Platforms and Consoles
Unfortunately, playing in teams in multiplayer is currently unavailable in Civ 7.
Developers of the game promised that the teams feature is coming soon to multiplayer though. It's currently unknown when the feature is coming but we'll be sure to update this page once info on this releases, so stay tuned for updates!

Civ 7 will have both online and offline multiplayer modes available. As mentioned, players will have to link their game to their 2K account to play online. For offline play, PC players will need to have connected through LAN, while Switch players can do so through local wireless multiplayer.
Other than the Switch version being restricted to map sizes smaller than Standard, it also has a player number restriction in multiplayer games, only supporting up to four players in the Antiquity and Exploration Ages, and six players in the Modern Age.

Civ 7 is coming to VR exclusively on Meta Quest 3 and 3S Headsets, and this version of the game supports multiplayer for up to 4 people.

Extremely disappointed we purchased the deluxe version as we love civilization via. We play hotseat. As of now it doesn't exist. We wasted our money as we bought to play together and will not use now. I hope the hotseat option will actually come out.
