Revolutions happen in Civilization VII (Civ 7) when settlements become unhappy. Learn what revolutions are and how to prevent revolutions in this guide.
List of Contents

Revolutions are the result of unhappy settlements remaining in this state for a few turns. If unresolved, these settlements will destroy buildings and eventually defect to another civilization.
What Does Happiness Do and How to Increase It

Since most crises in the Antiquity Age heavily penalize Happiness, expect many settlers to revolt, especially if you’re not aiming for a Culture Victory. However, if you're following the Culture Legacy path, Happiness will be less of a concern during this age.
| Building | Effect |
|---|---|
Villa

+3 Happiness +2 Influence +1 Happiness for each adjacent Mountainous Terrain +1 Happiness for each adjacent Natural Wonder +1 Happiness for each adjacent Wonder Antiquity Happiness Building |

Buildings such as the Altar and Villa provide Happiness yield and can help maintain a decent amount during a crisis. Giving these buildings adjacency bonuses, such as placing them near Natural Wonders, can further boost Happiness and prevent settlers from starting revolutions.

Settlements not built on Fresh Water tiles will heavily penalize your Happiness yield. Keep this in mind when choosing where to settle, and always pick tiles with a fresh water source to avoid this penalty and gain a +5 Happiness bonus!

Starting wars with other leaders can cause War Weariness, which lowers your settlements' Happiness. To prevent this, maintain good relationships with neighboring civilizations or form alliances with them.

Building too many settlements also reduces Happiness. To prevent revolutions, stick to the settlement limit shown at the top of the screen, and if you want to increase it, research technologies and civics to raise your settlement cap.
When to Build More Settlements

If you're struggling to keep settlements happy, especially during a crisis, you can try rushing the age. This is a good way to end the crisis's negative effects and transition to the next age with a fresh start.
