Increase Trade Range by building new settlements or proposing diplomacies in Civilization VII (Civ 7). See all the steps you can take on how to increase trade range in this guide.
List of Contents
To increase trade range, make sure to establish more settlements across the map, especially if you're trading from a distant land. Closer settlements help merchants set up trade routes faster and reduce the risk of attacks from independent people while traveling.
You can also send a scout prior to sending a merchant to look for available tiles to build new settlements. This also helps merchants find safer paths since most terrains, especially those on mountains and rivers, are impassable to these units in early ages.
Once you have a new settlement, purchase a new merchant from the new district and send them to the foreign settlement you wish to trade with. This way, the trade route can be established quicker, and you can fix any issues that arise, saving you turns for other actions.
Set Up Trade Routes With Merchants
If your target settlement intersects with another city, you need to ask their leaders to open their borders by proposing an Open Borders treaty. This treaty has a low success rate, even if you have a good relationship with them, so make sure to befriend them first to increase your chances.
Forming an alliance with other leaders can also make trading easier. It removes the need to propose an Open Borders treaty, allowing you to pass through all their territories regardless of region.
If your merchant is still unable to trade with foreign leaders, you can propose a Trade Relation Improvement treaty to access their settlement. If they accept, this should allow you to establish a trade route.
