Affects AI Civilization Bonuses

Persia

Just like in previous installments of Sid Meier's Civilization franchise, difficulty determines the bonuses that AI Civilizations get to their yields like gold, production, science, and culture, as well as starting units and combat strength.

No Change to AI Behavior

Higher difficulties in Civilization 7 do not change how the AI behaves, and instead makes use of artificial difficulty by giving the AI advantages to their throughput.

What Difficulty Should You Play?

Scribe for Civilization First-Timers

If you're new to the Civilization franchise, you can play on the Scribe difficulty for a more beginner-friendly experience. In past Civilization games, the easier difficulties give the player advantages and bonuses instead of the AI.

Governor for a Standard Experience

The default difficulty in Civilization 7 is the Governor difficulty. If you've had experince playing Civilization, and want a level playing field for both you and AI, then play on this setting.

Deity for Maximum Challenge

Playing on Deity gives the AI a huge advantage over the player and makes the early game really difficult if you get into bad terms with them. If you want the hardest challenge in Civilization 7, try and beat a game on Deity.

How to Change Difficulty

Change At the Beginning of the Game
