Talk to Shen Monkey

Upgrading Gourds will add Sip charges to them, allowing you to use them more.

To upgrade one of your Gourds, talk to Shen Monkey, as he is the only one who will be able to upgrade your Gourds.

You can find Shen Monkey in a grove near the Marsh of the White Mist Shrine in the Bamboo Grove area of Black Wind Mountain, the location in Chapter 1. If you have unlocked the Zodiac Village, he will move there, along with other merchants.

Use Luojia Fragrant Vines

Once you've located Shen Monkey, talk to him and select Upgrade Gourds to level up your equipment. Each Gourd differs in how many times they can be upgraded.

Not All Gourds Can Be Upgraded

Do note that not all Gourds you have can be upgraded. For example, the Trailblazer's Scarlet Gourd cannot be upgraded, while the Old Gourd can be improved multiple times.

You Can Also Upgrade Drinks

Shen Monkey can also upgrade Drinks, which are equippable items that give additional effects to your Gourds.

You need Awaken Wine Worms to upgrade Drinks, which you can find inside all along the map.

Soaks Cannot Be Upgraded

Soaks, which are another set of equipment that you can slot in your Drinks to added more effects, cannot be upgraded by any method.

If you want different effects with your Gourd or Drink, you can just equip a different Soak.
