How to Unlock Spirit Transformations

Talk to the Old Man in the Snake Trail

Old Man for Spirit Transformations
You unlock the ability to absorb Spirits after talking to the Old Man at the top of the Snake Trail shrine stairs in the Bamboo Grove. The best way to check if you have this area unlocked is by going to a shrine and check if you can teleport to the Snake Trail in the Bamboo Grove.

If you don't have this shrine unlocked yet, then you'll need to progress further through the main story to get there.

Different From Spell Transformations

Spirit Transformations are different from Spell Transformations. Spirit Transformations only last a short amount of time and only allow you to use the Yaoguai's ability. Meanwhile, Spell Transformations, like Guangzhi's Red Tides, last much longer and let you use multiple skills in battle.

Lingxuzi
To unlock the Bamboo Grove area, you'll first need to beat Lingxuzi in Guanyin Temple. Once you've beaten the boss, you can progress to the next area where the Old Man is located.

If you try to pick up spirits before talking to the Old Man, like the Wandering Wight's Spirit, the game will say that you "Cannot absorb Spirits without guidance".
