Is It Based on Journey to the West?

Game is a Retelling of the Story

As seen on the game's official site, it directly states that you'll get to "relive the tale of Jorney to the West" when playing this game. If you're a fan of the story or Chinese Mythology in general, then this is the game for you!

What We Can Expect to See

Act 1 of Journey to the West

Based on the trailers so far, it looks like the game will take place during Act 1 of Journey to the West. At the start of the story, Wukong hasn't ascended yet and is still unlocking all of his skills and transformations, which ends up happening during the game's story.

Also, the only time we see Wukong's Golden Headband is when he also dons his signature armour, which looks like it will occur towards the end of the game.

Wukong's Mentor Puti Zushi

Trailers show him talking to an old man, who is most likely Puti Zushi, Wukong's mentor. In Journey to the West, he's the one who teaches Wukong his transformations and skills so he will most likely be who we'll go to for levelling up, or he will show up periodically during the story to give Wukong new powers.

Foes from the Story

Expected Enemies

  • Yaoguai
  • 4 Heavenly Kings

From what we've seen so far, some of the enemies and bosses we can expect to encounter are Yaoguai and the Four Heavenly Kings. Yaoguai are demons who Wukong faces on his journey, while the Four Heavenly Kings are deities that were sent to subdue Wukong in the later parts of Act 1.

Possible Bosses

  • Juling Shen
  • Nezha
  • Erlang Shen

As for these characters, they appear in Act 1 of Journey to the West, but they haven't been seen, or named, in any trailers so far. However, we do know that Wukong fights them in the story, so it wouldn't be unreasonable to see them appear in the game.

Takes Place Mid-Way Through the Story

One last thing to note is that one of the trailers shows Wukong picking up his Golden Headband instead of it being forced on him. This could mean that the game takes place part way through Journey to the West since this scene reflects Wukong after his imprisonnment, where he starts his road to redemption.

However, the game could also occur after Journey to the West has occured as a while, since we see murals of Wukong's traveling companions in trailers and the official site. If this is the case, then this game's may also be a reimagining of the classic Monkey King story.
