If you've defeated some bosses that leave behind spirits early in the game, you might have encountered the "Cannot Absorb Spirits Without Guidance" message. To absorb this spirit, you must first acquire the Blessed Gourd later in the Bamboo Grove.

Only Specific Boss Spirits Can Be Absorbed

Not every boss in leaves behind a spirit that can be absorbed to unlock a new Spirit Skill. An example of a boss whose spirit can be absorbed is the Wandering Wight found in Chapter 1's Forest of Wolves area, near the Outside the Forest Keeper's Shrine.

The Blessed Gourd is required for absorbing the spirits of certain Yaoguai to unlock skills. You can upgrade your Gourd by obtaining the Blessed Gourd from an Old Wise Man in the Bamboo Grove after defeating the Lingxuzi boss.

To find the Old Wise Man who gives the ability to absorb spirits with the Blessed Gourd, head to the Bamboo Grove area near the Snake Trail Keeper's Shrine in Chapter 1 This area is accessed only after defeating the grey wolf guai, Lingxuzi. Climb the stairs from the shrine, and a cutscene will trigger when you approach the Old Wise Man on the right.

Retrieve Spirit From Shrine

If you weren't able to absorb a spirit of a previously defeated boss, you can return to any shrine after obtaining the spirit-absorbing Blessed Gourd to collect its spirit.

You can view and equip spirits in the "Spirits" section of the Equipment Menu. Each spirit has an active Spirit Skill that can be used in combat and a passive Equipped Effect that boosts your stats simply by equipping the spirit.
