Run out of hearts in The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom (EoW), and you'll get a Game Over. This guide will cover the penalties for dying, and give some tips to avoid ever getting a Game Over!
List of Contents
When your HP reaches zero, you will get a Game Over screen, which then allows you to return to your most recent save file.
Since the game autosaves frequently, even if you die unexpectedly, the save file should not be too far off, and you will not lose too much progress upon respawning.
In one of the the previous Switch / Game Boy entries, The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, you were awarded with a “Secret” or “Perfect” ending for clearing the game with zero deaths. However, no such ending exists in Echoes of Wisdom, so there's no need to worry about reloading even if you die.
While previous entries in The Legend of Zelda series would usually keep track of how many times you got a game over via a counter in the game's main menu, recent entries have done away with it, and it is noticeably not present in Echoes of Wisdom, so you can enjoy the game guilt free without worrying about having a perfect 000 on your counter!
Though there is no counter after dying, a Red X mark will appear on your map to show you where you died previously. The Mark does not have any special properties, and only serves as a reminder of your previous death. It will disappear after saving and reloading your game.
How to Avoid Dying |
---|
|
Bed Type | Recovery Amount |
---|---|
Old Bed | 0.5 Hearts every few seconds |
Soft Bed | 1 Heart every few seconds |
Zelda's Bed | 2 Hearts every few seconds |
Beds are not only for platforming, but can also recover HP when you rest on them. Sleep on beds before entering dangerous areas to make sure you are at full HP to avoid dying against enemies or environmental hazards!
The Heart Recovery rate is different for each bed, so make sure to use the best bed echo you have to recover HP much faster!
How to Heal and Restore Hearts Faster
A surefire way to increase your survivability is by increasing your max HP. Collect Heart Containers and Heart Pieces to increase your HP, all the way up to the maximum of 20 Hearts!
You can make smoothies from Smoothie Shops found all across Hyrule. Smoothies not only recover Hearts for Zelda, but some smoothies also have additional effects, such as Energy Recovery, and Damage Reduction!
Make use of your hard-earned ingredients, and turn them into smoothies to make your adventure much easier!
As a last resort, you should always have Fairy Bottles prepared. Fairy Bottles recover hearts once your HP reaches zero, so always make it a habit to replenish Fairies each time you use up a Fairy Bottle!
Accessory | Effect |

Equipping accessories that can reduce incoming damage can also increase your survivability. Increase your accessory slots by paying Rupees at the Great Fairy Shrine to equip more accessories that can help in your journey!
