Link is playable in the game's prologue sequence where you fight enemies and defeat Ganon. After defeating Ganon, the game switches to Zelda as the playable main character for throughout the game.
The Link you face midway in Suthorn Ruins is an impostor version of the swordsman. This is indicated by the red glowing eyes that appear temporarily before he attacks Zelda.
Link Boss Guide and How to Beat
It is revealed in the Still Missing main quest that Link is trapped in the Still World. After defeating Ganon as Zelda, Link appears briefly but gets trapped in a purple crystal and gets whisked away.
After completing the Lands of the Goddesses main quest, the Goddess will give a clue to Zelda to find Link at an ancient forest guarded by a sacred tree. This ancient forest is the Eternal Forest, a foggy forest where the Deku Tree resides.
Rescuing the Hero Link Walkthrough
Link is a swordsman who lives in Suthorn Village, a settlement Zelda and Tri will visit in the first parts of the game. He's a reliable neighbor who helps deal with various problems in the village, which is now in distress after the appearance of the rifts.
Based on a dialogue option with one of the NPCs in Suthorn Village, Zelda seems to have no idea who the swordsman that came to rescue her was. This implies that the story of Echoes of Wisdom takes place in a different timeline.
