To take a 3 Star photo of Caterpie, repeat the steps on how to get 2 Stars. But instead of having one Caterpie in the frame, you need to have both of them. To do this, throw a Fluffruit near them and wait till they reached the Fluffruit. Make sure to take a close-up shot to achieve 3 Star Diamond.

On the way to the flower fields area, you'll find a map signboard with Hoothoot on top. Focus your camera on the left edge of the signboard. When you get closer, play a Melody to lure the Caterpies to appear. Throw an Illumina Orb at them and take a close-up shot to achieve 4 Star Diamond.
