A free update for Metroid Dread was announced during the February 10, 2022 Nintendo Direct and was released later the same day. Read on to see an update summary of Version 2.0.0, including the new Dread Mode and Rookie Mode as well as patch notes.

New Dread Mode Added

The trailer for the free update of Metroid Dread showcased the new Dread Mode in Metroid Dread. In this game mode, when the player takes a hit from any enemy or projectile, they receive an immediate game over.

This includes weaker enemies such as Dizzean and boss attacks, so it is important to tread carefully and strategically throughout Planet ZDR when playing through this mode. Dread Mode will be unlocked after completing the game once on Hard Mode difficulty.

New Rookie Mode Added

In stark contrast to the other mode introduced in the update, the new Rookie Mode is more forgiving towards new players of the franchise. Playing the game in this mode will give players increased recovery and other perks during the playthrough.

Rookie Mode Featuers
✱ Increased energy recovery and ammo replenishment when killing enemies
✱ Reduced damage from boss attacks
✱ Destructible Boss projectiles are easier to break
✱ More missiles at the start of the game
✱ Finishing Counters for bosses are easier to perform

✱ New details added to the results screen after beating the game
✱ BUG FIX: Samus sliding down down a surface and touching a frozen enemy would crash the game

The Metroid Dread Demo was also included in the update. The playable area in the demo has been expanded and now includes the boss fight against Corpious. Rookie Mode was also added to the Demo for new players looking to try out the game!

Second Free Update Coming in April

The Nintendo Direct also announced a second free update coming in April of 2022, which will introduce a new Boss Rush Mode to the game. In this mode, you can battle the different bosses of Metorid Dread continuously, one at a time.
