Missile Tanks / Energy Tanks / Power Bomb Tanks
This is a guide on how to open all door types and destroy all the unique obstacle block types in Metroid Dread for the Nintendo Switch. Learn more about the kind of obstacle blocks and locked doors Samus will encounter as well as how to get by them to gain access to new areas!
To access new areas, various doors will require unique upgrades to open.
Door Name | Description / How to Open |
---|---|
Power Beam Door |
This glowing yellow door is the most basic door Samus will encounter. Shoot with the Power Beam. |
Charge Beam Door |
Power Beams do not work on this pulsing yellow door. However, it will change back to a Power Beam Door once unlocked for the first time. Shoot with the Charge Beam. |
Missile Cover |
A red and scaly cover blocks this door. Shoot the cover with a Missile to open this door. |
Worm Door |
A worm-like creature blocks the door and will attack when Samus is near. Defeat the worm creature by performing a melee counter at the right time. If you miss the melee counter, it will be vulnerable to all attacks after attacking. Simply shoot it. |
Sensor-Lock Door |
This door will automatically close when Samus tries to pass. Use Phantom Cloak to go through without getting detected. |
Thermal Door |
This door will only work with the flow of magma. Use a thermal fuel device to control the magma flow. After changing the the magma flow, it will open upon approaching it. |
Shutter Platform |
This shutter door will quickly shut if you step on the shutter platform. Use Flash Shift to get through. |
Wide Beam Cover |
This cover is designed with 3 points in front. Use the Wide Beam to remove this covering. |
Grapple Beam Door |
A closed door that cannot be opened with Missiles or Power Beams. Use the Grapple Beam to pull this door open. |
Plasma Beam Cover Green Door |
A green light dome covers this door. This green door cover can only be destroyed after you get the Plasma Beam Upgrade. |
Wave Beam Cover Purple Door |
A purple light dome covers this door. This cover can only be destroyed after you get the Wave Beam Upgrade. |
Super Missile Cover |
This cover is designed with green gridlines. This green door cover can only be destroyed with a Super Missile. |
Morph Ball Launcher |
A launcher that allows Samus to travel to new areas in Morph Ball form. Use a Bomb to activate. |
EMMI Zone Door Modes | |

These pixelated doors are the entrances to EMMI Zones and are usually grayscale. However, if an EMMI robot is in Pursuit Mode, they turn red and cannot be passed through.
These doors will also turn red when you exit the EMMI Zone and will be inaccessible for a few seconds.
This door guards the Central Units, the mysterious A.I. located in planet ZDR. Blast with the Omega Cannon to open.
Various block types exist in Metroid Dread that will lead Samus to hidden power-up items and new areas when destroyed!
Variant | Description / How to Clear |
---|---|
Beam Block |
A regular black box with glowing circles. This block can be destroyed with any kind of attack. |
Missile Block |
A red block with a missile icon etched in front. Shoot it with a Missile. |
Bomb Block |
A pink block with a morph ball symbol. It is typically found hidden on floors or walls. Use the Morph Ball Bomb or Cross Bomb to destroy it. |
Pitfall Block |
Breaks immidiately when Samus is on top of it. The Cross Bomb can be used to cross area of up to 4 pitfall blocks. |
Speed Booster Block |
Orange blocks with a Speed Booster arrow symbol. While Speed Booster is active, run through this block or use a Shinespark to destroy it. How to Solve All Speed Booster Block Puzzles |
Screw Attack Block |
These blue blocks have a thunder icon on them. They can be destroyed with the Screw Attack ability. |
Power Bomb Block |
Orange block with a Power Bomb symbol. Use the Power Bomb to destroy them. |
Grapple Beam Block |
Blocks with a glowing blue inverted triangle. Use the Grapple Beam to pull this block and destroy it. |
Wide Beam Box |
A huge box with circuit-looking lines connected to 3 points. After being pushed back, it will remain in place. Use the Wide Beam to push this object. |
Grapple Beam Box |
A huge box with a glowing blue inverted triangle. Once pulled, it will drop down, revealing a new path. Use the Grapple Beam to pull this object. |
Black Block |
Regular black box. Use any attack to destroy it. |
Alien Block |
Alien remains in cubic form. Shoot it with the Power Beam continuously or use the Diffusion Beam. |

Alien Remains |
Vein-like alien remains protrude from walls (usually dead-ends). Shoot with the Power Beam continuously to destroy the wall and open up new areas. |
Breakable Walls / Pillars |
These seemingly dead-end walls/pillars are usually found between two areas with no visible doors or passages. Use Pulse Radar to check suspicious-looking dead-ends. Shoot breakable walls or pillars with the Power Beam to open up new passages. |
Storm Missile Box |
A door with green dotted lights. To open the green dot door, hit the 5 green points located nearby with Storm Missile. |
Fire Plant (Enky) |
A tall plant that will burn you when you touch it. Shoot it with an Ice Missile. |
