The Thief's Action Ability Steal has the required skills needed to be able to steal the enemy's equipment. You will need to learn each skill individually using Job Points before you are able to use them in battle.
| Steps to Incapacitate the Enemy | |
|---|---|
| 1 | Turn the enemy into a Chicken or a Toad. |
| 2 | Put the enemy to Sleep. |
| 3 | Inflict Immobilize, Disable, Stop, or any other status effect that prevents them from taking their turns. |
| 4 | Reduce their Speed to 1 using the Arts of War ability Rend Speed to minimize the number of turns the enemy receives. |
We recommend rendering the enemy unit incapacitated, but not KO'd, before you begin stealing. There are various ways to ensure the enemy is unable to attack your units while you attempt to steal his/her equipment.
In battle, when facing an enemy unit with equipment, simply move right next to them and use the Steal command of your choice. The success rate will vary depending on certain conditions, but generally, it is better to steal from behind the enemy or from their sides.
It's also recommended to defeat all other enemies so that you don't have to worry about them while attempting to steal from a target.
| Unit | Abilities | Equipment |
|---|---|---|
| Ramza (Incapacitator) |
・Mettle ・Arts of War ・Dual Wield (optional) |
・Thief's Cap ・Excalibur or Akademy Blade (optional) |
| Black Mage (Debuffer) |
・Mystic Arts ・Arcane Strength |
・Wizard Rod ・Wizard Robe |
| Monk (Steal User) |
・Steal ・Attack Boost |
・Hermes Shoes |
Start by having the Monk defeat enemies with Shockwave before Ramza uses Dual Wield Rend Speeds to reduce the Steal target's Speed to 1. From there, the Black Mage will use Repose and either Toad or Trepidation on the target to apply debuffs, while Ramza spams Tailwind on the Monk so that they can steal more often.
Monk is used over other Jobs as the main stealer since they inherently have Brawler, allowing the unit to have both Brawler and Attack Boost at the same time to increase the percentage of stealing.
| Ability | Base Percentage |
|---|---|
| Steal Helmet | Unit's Speed + 40 |
| Steal Armor | Unit's Speed + 35 |
| Steal Shield | Unit's Speed + 35 |
| Steal Weapon | Unit's Speed + 30 |
| Steal Accessory | Unit's Speed + 40 |
When stealing equipment, the user's Speed stat is the main factor in calculating the success rate. Additionally, each individual skill in the Steal action ability tree has its own base rate. The table above shows the base formula for computing the success rate of stealing.
The enemy's evasion rates affect the success rate of Steal as well. Their inherent class evade, weapon evade (if equipped with Weapon Guard), shield evade, and accessory evade all factor into the success rate.
We highly recommend attempting to steal the enemy's cloak first if they have one equipped, followed by their shield, and then everything else. Cloaks grant evasion from all sides, while shields only grant evasion from the front and the sides, but not from behind.
| Skills and Effects that Increase Steal Rate |
|---|
| ・User has the Attack Boost support ability. ・User has the Brawler support ability. ・Target is Charging up an attack. ・Target is Asleep. ・Target is turned into a Chicken or a Frog. ・User and target has Best or Good Zodiac Compatibility. |
| Skills and Effects that Decrease Steal Rate |
| ・Target has the Defense Boost support ability. ・Target has the Protect status effect. ・User and target have Worst or Bad Zodiac Compatibility. |
In addition to the unit's base Speed, the above skills and effects can increase or decrease the Steal success rate.
Zodiac Signs and Compatibility Chart
The support ability Safeguard prevents enemies from breaking or stealing the user's equipment, making it invaluable to protect against skills that break or steal equipment.
