A death counter will appear when a unit gets knocked out in Final Fantasy Tactics - The Ivalice Chronicles. Learn what happens when a unit dies, how treasure chests and crystals work, and what happens when Ramza dies here.
A death counter will appear above a KO'd unit starting from 3 and will count down to zero, progressing every time the unit's turn comes. As long as the death counter is present, a unit can be revived with a Phoenix Down or Raise spells.
When the death counter reaches zero, the unit will turn into a crystal or treasure chest and cannot be revived anymore with any spells, skills, or items!
Units will turn into Treasure Chests or Crystals when their death counter runs. You can then move another unit to retrieve the treasure chest which allows you to get random loot from the unit including equipped gear.
Obtaining a dead unit's crystal will allow you to learn their abilities if they were human units, or restore the HP and MP of the unit who claimed them. Retrieving crystals from dead monsters, however, will always restore HP and MP.
Treasure Chests and Crystals must be obtained during battle to receive their rewards as they are lost if you finish the battle without obtaining them!
It's an automatic game over when Ramza's death counter runs out and he turns into crystal. As the central character in the story, it's not possible to continue the story without him and you'll need to load a previous save when this happens.
Fortunately, Ramza also has a death counter and you have enough time to revive him before he crystalizes. Always make sure to have at least one White Mage or a fast unit that can use a Phoenix Down in your party to avoid units getting killed or a potential game over if Ramza gets KO'd!
