How to Beat Elmdore

Marquis Messam Elmdore is a boss encountered in Chapters 3 and 4 of Final Fantasy Tactics - The Ivalice Chronicles. See how to defeat this boss, the best jobs to beat them, and an overview of their stats and details here.

Overview

Encountered in Chapter 3 and Chapter 4

Also known as the Silver Prince, Messam Elmdore is encountered as a boss in two battles across Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 of the main story.

The first encounter is on the Riovanes Castle Roof, where he and his minions Celia and Lettie threaten the Skyseer Rapha.

The second encounter is a showdown in the Limberry Castle Keep in Chapter 4, where Ramza and his party can put him down for good.

100% Walkthrough Guide

How to Beat Elmdore (1st Encounter)

How to Beat

Optimize for Speed

Elmdore Riovanes Roof

This encounter with Elmdore is more of a preview for your later battle in Chapter 4, and it won't end conclusively.

With that in mind, the best strategy is to optimize your party for Speed so that you can act first and Protect Rapha while taking out your foes.

Use high-speed Jobs like Ninja or jobs that can ignore elevation differences like Black Mage (with high speed) to focus your attacks on one enemy.

How to Increase Speed

Avoid Elmdore's AOE

Elmdore Muramasa

Elmdore is likely to use his first turn to cast Muramasa, a powerful Iaido spell with a large AOE. Avoid taking damage by keeping your distance and instead move straight against Celia and Lettie, Elmdore's bodyguards.

Have a Chemist or White Mage heal Rapha if she takes damage from Elmdore's AOE.

Focus Down A Minion

Celia Down

Attacking Elmdore directly can be risky, as Elmdore has First Strike, a reaction ability that allows him to attack his attacker first.

Instead, focus your attention on taking out either Celia or Lettie (Celia is closer to your start location).

Use Ramza to climb or teleport up to their location at the top of the roof and hit them while other members target Celia with ranged attacks or help Rapha.

Defeating either one will cause the battle to end.

Prepare to Steal the Genji Set

Elmdore Limberry Keep

This is your second and final encounter with the Silver Prince, who has embraced Vampirism. Here Elmdore is equipped with the powerful Genji Equipment, and has access both to Sword Spirit (Iaido) and special Vampire powers.

Unlike in War of the Lions, The Ivalice Chronicles allows you to steal the full Genji set from Elmdore. Thus, it's in your interest to field a strong Ninja Thief (either Ramza or someone else) to do the stealing while your party disables Elmdore with Speed debuffs.

Make sure you bring one unit that can decrease enemy Bravery to make stealing easier!

How to Steal Genji Equipment

Take Out Lettie and Celia First

Elmdore Lettie Celia Attacking

Lettie and Celia are back to support Elmdore against you, and they have the dangerous habit of casting powerful debuffs like Stop, Sleep, Doom, and Death, in addition to the powerful Ultima Spell.

Wear gear like the Protect Ring, Jujitsu Gi, and Jade Armlet to defend yourselves against their status attacks and focus your attacks on them to take them out quickly, leaving Elmdore without backup.

This is also a second opportunity to learn Ultima, if you didn't learn it at Limberry Castle Gate earlier. Make sure Ramza is in his Gallant Knight Job and immune to the other status spells, and both Assassins should target him with Ultima.

All Abilities Learned Through Combat

Spread Out to Avoid AOEs

Elmdore Lettie Celia

All three enemies in this encounter can set off high-damage AOE spells, so keep your party dispersed to minimize their damage. Remember that Elmdor's Sword Spirit abilities are not affected by Faith, so you cannot use a low-faith character to tank abilities like Muramasa.

Instead, put some space in your formation as you close with the boss.

Hit Elmdore With Undodgeable Attacks

Elmdore Holy Sword

Elmdore has Shirahadori, one of the most powerful reaction abilities in the game. This makes him likely to negate physical attacks.

Instead, use undodgeable abilities, like Holy Sword and Iaido attacks, as well as Magicks and Arithmeticks. Even Dual Wield attacks will hit with the second weapon, so Ninjas can do some damage.

If either Celia or Lettie charges up Ultima, have the targeted character stand next to Elmdore to redirect the spell to him as well!

This party uses a Ninja with Thief and Monk skills to steal Elmdore's equipment. You can also use Ramza for this role by having him equip Thief Skills as a Gallant Knight, and bring along a different character.

Meanwhile Agrias will provide damage while Beowulf casts Chicken on Elmdore to lower his Bravery. Mustadio can provide item support as a Chemist and lower Elmdore's speed with Arts of War.

If Ramza's the stealer, you can fill the flex slot with another damage dealer Orlandeau or a supporting Mage.
