Use the Steel skill to raise Bravery and the Intimidate skill to lower Bravery in Final Fantasy Tactics - The Ivalice Chronicles. Find out how to raise or lower bravery, what bravery does, and learn what desertion threats are!
List of Contents
Ramza can use the Steel ability from the Squire class after getting it in Chapter 2 to raise a unit's Bravery by 5 points. It's a reliable way to raise Bravery, especially useful for breaking the Chicken status.
Later in the game during Chapter 4, Ramza gains access to Shout, a powerful self-buff that raises Bravery by 10 while also increasing Speed, Attack, and Magic.
The Orator job has a speech skill called Praise, which raises Bravery by 4 points. However, unlike Steel and Shout, Praise has a chance to fail depending on the caster's Magic Attack stat.
When equipped with the Bravery Boost reaction ability, from the Dancer job, a unit will gain +3 Bravery whenever they are hit with a physical attack.
Units placed in the Barracks will have their Bravery increase by 1 point automatically every hour.
Have a unit pick up crystals in battle and they can gain increased Bravery. Crystals can appear in the battlefield after a unit dies.
What Happens When a Unit Dies?
Orators can also reduce Bravery using the skill Intimidate. This can lower a unit’s Bravery by up to 20 points, though like Praise, it relies on a hit chance.
Mystics can cast Trepidation, a magic-based skill that reduces Bravery of multiple enemies in an area. It's an effective AoE debuff, especially if you're trying to disable enemy counters or reactions during group battles.
Beowulf’s special skill Chicken dramatically reduces a unit's Bravery by 50 points. If it drops to 9 or lower, the unit is inflicted with Chicken status, causing them to flee and act uncontrollably.
Bravery changes made during battle are temporary. However, for every 4 points of Bravery gained or lost, a unit will receive a +1 or -1 permanent Bravery change after the fight.
For example, if you use Praise to increase a unit’s Bravery by +4 in battle, the unit will keep +1 permanent Bravery after the battle is over.
Bravery directly affects the chance of triggering reaction abilities like Counter, Blade Grasp, or Auto-Potion. Bravery is capped at 97 and even if it goes above 100 during battle, it’ll drop back down to 97 after the fight.
Certain physical attacks, especially barehanded strikes, Knight’s Swords, and Katanas, deal more damage at higher Bravery values. This means that Jobs like Monks and Samurai benefit greatly from high Bravery stats.
Bravery affects the Treasure Hunter movement ability as lower Bravery gives a higher chance of finding rare items on treasure tiles. If you are planning to farm rare loot, then you can consider temporarily lowering Bravery on item farming units.
If a unit’s in-battle Bravery drops to 9 or less, they will become a Chicken, fleeing from battle. Worse, if their permanent Bravery drops to 5 or less, they may permanently leave your party.
If a unit's permanent Bravery drops to 15 or lower, they may start threatening to leave the party after battle. These warnings happen more frequently the lower the Bravery gets, especially below 10.
They won’t leave right away, but it’s your sign to fix things fast, either increase their Bravery or avoid using them until you do.
If a unit’s permanent Bravery drops to 5 or below, they will automatically leave your party forever. If this happens by accident, do not save your game unless you’re okay with losing that unit permanently.
