Use the Preach ability to raise Faith and the Enlighten skill to lower Faith in Final Fantasy Tactics - The Ivalice Chronicles. Find out how to raise or lower faith, what faith does, and learn what happens when you max faith!
List of Contents
Preach is a Speechcraft ability from the Orator job that raises a target’s Faith by +4 points on a successful hit. The success rate depends on the caster’s Magic Attack stat, but it’s a consistent way to build up Faith over time. For every 4 temporary Faith a unit gains, they’ll earn +1 permanent Faith after the battle.
The Faith Boost ability is a Reaction Ability learned from the Bard job that grants +3 to the unit when hit by a magical attack. This stacks well in magic-heavy encounters and is a passive way to build up Faith over time.
Enlighten is another Orator Speechcraft ability that lowers a unit’s Faith by -20 if it hits. It works just like Preach but in reverse! Just like with raising Faith, every 4 points lowered equals -1 permanent Faith after the battle.
Faith changes made in battle, whether through Preach or Enlighten, are temporary. However, for every 4 points of Faith gained or lost, a unit receives a +1 or -1 permanent change after the fight ends. This lets you slowly shape your units into high-powered mages or magic-resistant tanks over the course of multiple battles.
Faith directly boosts the effectiveness, damage, and success rate of all magical abilities a unit casts. The higher a unit’s Faith, the stronger their magic becomes. This applies to both healing and offensive spells, making Faith especially important for White Mages, Black Mages, Summoners, and other caster jobs.
If both the caster and the target have high Faith, the effect of the spell is amplified even further, whether it's dealing damage or restoring HP. This means a spell cast by a high Faith unit on a high Faith ally or enemy will hit much harder or heal for much more than usual.

Units become immune to magic, both harmful and helpful, if their Faith reaches 0. This status effect is called Atheist and is used in very niche builds. Construct 8 naturally has this condition as part of their unique Automaton job.
Enemy mages won't cast magic on units with Atheist and while this can be beneficial when fighting them, it's better to keep Faith at around 1-3 for low faith builds. This ensures Mages still target low faith, safeguarding your other units with high Faith.
Although high Faith increases the power of spells a unit uses, it also increases magical damage they receive from the same spells. This means Mages need to take care fighting enemy Mages as they are more susceptible to enemy magical attacks.
Increasing a generic unit's Faith too high will also cause them to leave the party permanently after battle!
If a unit’s permanent Faith reaches 85 or more, they’ll start complaining after battle and threatening to leave the party. These warnings don’t guarantee they’ll leave but they’re a sign that you’re getting too close to the danger zone.
A unit will leave the party if their Faith reaches 95. The safest level to stop increasing Faith is 94 to ensure the unit deals as much damage possible with their magical attacks! Ramza is the only unit that you can safely increase his Faith to 97 without threat of desertation.
