Some Abilities in Final Fantasy Tactics (FF Tactics) can only be learned in the heat of battle. Find out what they are and how to learn them in this guide!
List of Contents

Certain Abilities can by taught to a unit simply by casting it on the unit. If the unit is capable of learning the Ability, and it survives the hit it will learn the Ability instantly and for free with no JP spent.
| Conditions for Combat Learning Abilities |
|---|
| ・Unit must be in the Job that can learn the Ability. ・Unit can learn Abilities from both allies and enemies. ・Unit cannot be KO'd or affected by ailments like Stop, Toad, or Stone. ・Combat learning is a chance-based, so it is not guaranteed from the first hit. ・If a spell heals HP, the receiving unit must have some damage to heal. |
Combat learning can be powerful, but it requires that the unit be of the correct Job and be in the correct condition to learn.
For example, to learn Firaja from being hit by it, the character must be a Black Mage (since Firaja is a Black Magick spell), and cannot be incapacitatedby a status effect.
| Job | Combat Learning-Exclusive Abilities | Location |
|---|---|---|
Gallant Knight
|
Ultima
|
Limberry Castle Gate (Battle 42) |
Summoner
|
Zodiark
| Midlight's Deep: END |
Two abilities are exclusive to combat, meaning they cannot be learned except through being targeted by an enemy using it.
These are the spell Ultima, which only Ramza in his Gallant Knight Job can learn, and the summon Zodiark, which is used by the final boss of Midlight's Deep.
| Job | Spell |
|---|---|
Black Mage
|
|
White Mage
|
|
Time Mage
|
|
Summoner
|
While not exclusive to combat learning, certain powerful spells among the Black Magick, White Magick, Time Magick, and Summoning schools can be learned in battle.
Combat learning be a JP-efficient way to propagate powerful spells across your characters, since only one unit will need to pay the JP cost of learning a spell, then teach it to their allies during battle.

The main downside of using combat learning to teach spells is that learning is chance-based, so it might take multiple tries to teach a spell.
Furthermore, a unit must be hit by a spell and survive in order to learn. Your Black Mage won't learn Firaja if it gets KO'd by its teacher!
