This guide shows the best jobs that each unit type should use when progressing through Final Fantasy Tactics - The Ivalice Chronicles. See the optimal job progression routes for Ramza, as well as physical and magickal units here.
| Job | Recommended Abilities |
|---|---|
Squire (Ramza)
Level 2 |
JP Boost Movement +1 |
Knight
Level 3 |
Rend Weapon Rend Power |
Monk
Level 5 |
Shockwave Aurablast Chakra Brawler |
Monk is an excellent DPS class for early game due to its versatile kit. This job has amazing damage output, good range, and self-sustaining capabilities.
| Job | Recommended Abilities |
|---|---|
Archer
Level 4 |
Archer's Bane Concentration |
Thief
Level 5 |
Movement +2 Jump +2 |
Geomancer
Level 3 |
Attack Boost |
Ninja
Any Level |
Dual Wield |
After gaining the necessary skills from the Monk class, Ninja will be the next step up in terms of damage output. Ninjas are naturally fast and can hit hard thanks to their Dual Wield ability.
| Job | Recommended Abilities |
|---|---|
Knight
Level 4 |
Rend Weapon Rend Power |
Dragoon
Level 2 |
Ignore Elevation |
Samurai
Any Level |
Iaido Abilities Shirahadori |
Keep in mind that using Iaido abilities requires you to have the associated katana in your inventory. You should also note that the katana drawn has a chance to break when used for an ability.
| Job | Recommended Abilities |
|---|---|
Squire (Ramza)
Max Level |
Mettle Shirahadori Dual Wield Movement +2 |
When you get to late game content, it's best to switch Ramza back to a Squire since this is his Special Job. Aside from typical Squire abilities, Ramza also gains access to powerful skills like Ultima.
Equip some of the more notable abilities you've unlocked along the way like Chakra and Dual Wield to make Ramza a powerful all-around unit.
| Job | Recommended Abilities |
|---|---|
Squire
Level 2 |
JP Boost Movement +1 |
Knight
Level 3 |
Rend Weapon Rend Power |
Monk
Level 5 |
Shockwave Aurablast Chakra Brawler |
The progression for regular Squires does not differ from Ramza's for much of the early game content. Just like with Ramza, you are going to want these units to change to Monk.
| Job | Recommended Abilities |
|---|---|
Archer
Level 4 |
Archer's Bane Concentration |
Thief
Level 5 |
Movement +2 Jump +2 |
Geomancer
Level 3 |
Attack Boost |
Ninja
Any Level |
Dual Wield |
Keeping in line with Ramza's progression plan, go for Ninja next to learn the Dual Wield ability.
| Job | Recommended Abilities |
|---|---|
Knight
Level 4 |
Rend Weapon Rend Power |
Dragoon
Level 2 |
Ignore Elevation |
Samurai
Any Level |
Iaido Abilities Shirahadori |
Transitioning to Samurai as you progress further into the game makes sense given their offensive capabilities. Don't forget to level the required jobs to unlock it as you play through the story.
Ninja
|
Samurai
|
Since regular units cannot unlock Special Jobs, it's best to have them stick to either Ninja or Samurai for endgame. Ninjas excel at single-target damage while Samurai have a more versatile kit at their disposal.
| Job | Recommended Abilities |
|---|---|
Chemist
Level 2 |
Auto-Potion Throw Items Treasure Hunter |
White Mage
Any Level |
White Magick Abilities Arcane Defense |
If you are looking for more survivability, have your Chemists unlock White Mage for their supportive abilities and healing spells.
| Job | Recommended Abilities |
|---|---|
Chemist
Level 2 |
Auto-Potion Throw Items Treasure Hunter |
Black Mage
Any Level |
Black Magick Abilities Magic Counter Arcane Strength |
Chemists can go the Black Mage route first should you need the extra firepower on your team. Black Mages have a variety of elemental spells at their disposal to maximize their damage.
| Job | Recommended Abilities |
|---|---|
White Mage
Level 5 |
White Magick Abilities Arcane Defense |
Black Mage
Level 5 |
Black Magick Abilities Magic Counter Arcane Strength |
Time Mage
Level 4 |
Swiftness Teleport Mana Shield |
Mystic
Level 4 |
Manafont |
Arithmetician
Any Level |
Arithmeticks EXP Boost Accrue EXP Accure JP |
The Arithmetician itself is rather underwhelming as it is the slowest class in the game. However, giving its Arithmeticks to other mage classes can be quite potent.
White Mage
|
Black Mage
|
Once you've acquired all the other essential abilities from other classes, you can change your unit back to either White Mage or Black Mage depending on your roster's needs. Either way, having Arithmeticks equipped on your unit will prove to be useful for dealing map-wide damage.
