In Chapter 4 of Final Fantasy Tactics - The Ivalice Chronicles, you will be given a choice of either the North Wall or the South Wall. See which route is the better option, what sets them apart, and how each choice affects the game, here.
List of Contents

The South Wall’s battlefield is flat and open, giving you direct access to enemy lines without the delays caused by elevation changes. The fight starts with a NInja and a thief rushing your party, which can be dangerous at first, but removing them quickly shifts the battle firmly in your favor.
From there, the slower-moving Knights and Archers are easy to pick apart. This path is particularly efficient for balanced teams without high-mobility skills, as it minimizes time spent simply moving into range.

Whichever wall you choose, your next mission will always be the Sluice Gate battle in Fort Besselat. The route has no impact on the main story or your available party members. The Sluice Gate battle itself plays out the same way no matter what, with the same objectives and enemy placement.
This means the choice is more about tailoring the fight to your current party’s strengths and mobility.
The North Wall pits you against a smaller enemy group: Archers, a Summoner, Dragoons, and a Monk, However, the map’s vertical design forces you to climb and navigate tight walkways before you can properly engage.
If your party has mobility abilities like Teleport, Ignore Height, or Fly, the terrain becomes far less of a hurdle, letting you turn the smaller enemy count into a quick, clean victory.

The South Wall battle has more enemies overall, but the wider, more open terrain gives you far greater freedom to maneuver and respond to threats. It starts aggressively, with fast units trying to reach your backline, but the lack of chokepoints makes it easier to intercept and eliminate them before they cause too much disruption.
Reviving allies is also simpler here, as you won’t have to climb or detour to reach them. The combination of enemy numbers and open space makes this route ideal for players who want a faster pace without sacrificing flexibility.
