Playable characters are permanent party members that join Ramza on his journey. As a note, some of these characters will start off as guest characters, or even enemies, and you will need to progress the story to unlock them.

Guest characters are units that will join your party during certain sections of the story, but you cannot control them in battle. Unlike the playable characters that started off as guests, they will never permanently join Ramza.

NPC characters are either enemies or story characters that never join Ramza's side in battle. However, this doesn't mean that they're all enemies, but that they just cannot be controlled by the player.
How Many Playable Characters Are There?
13 Playable Characters
There are a total of 13 Playable Characters in the game. Do note that this only accounts for unique named characters that you can control, and there are still a ton of non-unique generic playable characters that you can recruit.
What are the Character Types?
Playable, Guest, NPCs
| Type | Explanation |
|---|---|
| Playable | Recruitable characters that are directly controlled in combat. |
| Guest | Allies to the party, but they act on their own without player input. |
| NPC | Cannot be controlled are recruited. Sometimes enemies of the party. |
There are three different types of characters in FF Tactics. There are Playable Characters who are allies that can be recruited and directly controlled in battle, Guest Characters who are allies that act on their own, and NPCs who cannot be recruited or controlled.
Some Guests and NPCs Become Playable
As a note, some characters become Playable, even if they were initially Guests or NPCs. However, this only applies to a small number of characters, so don't expect to recruit everyone that you meet.
