The first Pickaxe is unlocked as part of the tutorial, during the Tools of the Trade main contract. In this Contract, you will be required to craft a Pickaxe I to progress.
Get the materials and silver needed (you likely already acquired these from the prologue). Go to the Carpenter, select Craft New Items, then select the Pickaxe I and craft it.
Tools of the Trade Walkthrough
The primary use of the Pickaxe is to harvest metal from any mining spot located on your Map. The Pickaxe is automatically equipped for your character, so the only thing you need to do is maneuver your ship close to a mining spot until you see the Harvest prompt.
If you click the interact button, a mini-game will appear. The goal is to hit the button when the indicator points to the colored spot on the tool. Hitting the green zone yields more resources compared to the yellow zone.
How to Harvest Metals and All Metal List
If you prefer not playing the mini-game every time you harvest, you can turn on the Auto Harvest feature in the settings menu. Although this feature makes harvesting easier and impossible to fail, it also takes longer and gives you less resources per node.

To upgrade your Pickaxe, you must first reach specific Infamy Ranks and obtain their blueprints. You can find these blueprints inside a chest found in your mailbox upon ranking up. With this, you can now upgrade your Pickaxe through the Carpenter.
You can harvest all metal types using the Pickaxe I tool. However, you'll harvest faster and get more rewards when you use upgraded pickaxes.
