Steps to Harvest Metals |

Note: You don't need to go down to your ship to gather materials. If a prompt doesn't appear as you get closer, it may mean that another player has already gathered the materials. |
To start harvesting Metals, you must first craft yourself a tool that will enable you to do so. Visit the Carpenter to craft yourself a Pickaxe, which is the primary tool for gathering metals.
As you progress further in the game, you'll be looking to upgrade your pickaxe in order to be able to harvest more and rarer metals.
Metals can be obtained by mining ore deposites found in the open world. You may refer to your Map to locate particular gathering spots, but do keep in mind that these are not the only places you can harvest metals, as they can be found randomly.
Once you've arrived at your desired ore deposit, maneuver your ship close until a prompt to harvest it appears. Interacting with this will allow you to play a mini-game wherein you need to tap on a gauge with precise timing to get resources.
If a prompt doesn't appear after getting close to the resource node, it simply means that it has already been gathered by another player and is set to respawn after some time.

In the settings menu, you can turn on Auto Harvest feature, which will allow you to harvest resources without going through the mini-game. Although this is easier, it will take you longer to harvest and you get fewer resources per node.
Refined Metals are higher-quality metal materials that allow you to craft better items and ship parts. These Refined Metals can be crafted using a number of related Raw Metals through the Refinery.
