How to Learn Ultima

Get Hit by the Spell from Ultima Demons in Chapter 4

Ultima Demon

Ramza can learn Ultima during the battles in Chapter 4, starting with Limberry Castle Gate.

To learn it, Ramza must get hit by the spell when an Ultima Demon uses it against him while in his Gallant Knight Job. He needs to survive getting hit by Ultima to learn the spell, and he'll fail to learn it if he dies when hit or if he's under status effects such as Stone, Toad, or Stop.

There are a limited number of battles where you can encounter Ultima Demons, so make sure that you have the Gallant Knight Job equipped until you've learned the Ultima spell.

All Abilities Learned Through Combat

Cast Shell or Decrease Faith to Survive Attack

Casting Shell on Ramza can help him survive the spell by increasing his magical defense. Make sure you have someone who can cast Shell or Wall on him to better his chances of surviving the spell!

Alternatively, you can also lower Ramza's Faith with the Enlighten Ability so that Ultima's damage is reduced. Just make sure it isn't completely reduced to zero though, since this will make him immune to Ultima, and he can't get damaged to learn the spell.

Chapter 4 - Limberry Castle Gate

The earliest battle Ramza can learn Ultima is at Limberry Castle Gate during Chapter 4. This battle has you facing both Celia and Lettie, two Assassins that can cast Ultima against your party, with Ramza starting right next to Celia.

You can force Celia to cast Ultima on Ramza by equipping a Black Garb and Nu Khai Armband, which grants him immunity to Stop and Charm, respectively. Celia won't use Shadowbind or Charm when these are equipped and will use Ultima instead!

Limberry Castle Gate Walkthrough (Battle 42)

Chapter 4 - Limberry Castle Keep

FFT - Limberry Castle Keep 1 Treasure Location

The next battle Ramza can learn Ultima is right after Limberry Castle Gate against Marquis Elmdore, flanked by Celia and Lettie. This battle will end once you deal enough damage to bring Elmdore to critical HP, so it's a good idea to instead focus on both Celia and Lettie during this fight.

The two assassins will respawn as Ultima Demons once you KO them. Though they lose the ability to inflict Stop and Charm, the Ultima Demons have more magical attacks, which means it's still easier to use the Black Garb and Nu Khai Armband trick to force Celia and Lettie to cast Ultima.

Chapter 4 - Mullonde Cathedral Sanctuary

Complete Mullonde Cathedral Battles in Chapter 4

The fight against Zalbaag in Mullonde Cathedral Sanctuary has one Ultima Demon that may cast the spell against Ramza during the fight.

It's harder to learn the spell in this battle due to Zalbaag constantly harassing your party. The two weaker Archaeodaemons also can't use Ultima, which means fewer opportunities to learn the spell.

Chapter 4 - Airship Graveyard

FFT - Airship Graveyard

The final battle against Ultima, the High Seraph, is the last instance you can learn Ultima by getting hit and surviving the spell when the Ultima Demons use it against you. Notably, Alma can also learn the spell if she manages to survive getting hit by it during the battle.

The battle in the Airship Graveyard happens after a point of no return, so you won't be able to use Ultima if you continue or reload a save just before heading into Orbonne Monastery. We recommend learning the spell before this fight!

Ramza is the only person who can learn Ultima, and it's only available via the Gallant Knight Job. This spell isn't in the Action Ability list, and instead, it can only be learned by surviving an opposing Ultima spell that was casted by an Ultima Demon.

you can learn it in the second phase by getting hit from ultima by the ultima demons. you still cant hold it when you finish or exit the fight

this is NOT true. you can NOT learn Ultima from being hit by it from Ultima story boss. it can ONLY be learned as Squire and from the chap 4 fight.
