Dead Space Remake (2023) Review

Pros of the Dead Space Remake

Good Points of the Dead Space Remake

Remastered Story and Characters are Better Than the Original

Dead Space Remake - Reworked Story

The Dead Space Remake truly shines when new and returning players experience the remastered story and fleshed-out characters, first-hand. When EA Motive claimed that they only wanted to build on what story the original game had, they managed to deliver on all fronts.

Pulling out all the stops for a fully voiced Isaac, a revamped script for the cast, as well as the addition of Side Missions and overhauled log entries, the Remake delivers a much better story experience than its predecessor. In the Remake, each characters' story arc feels that much more complete than what we got in the original Dead Space.

Graphics and Sound Overhaul Revives a Classic for Next-Gen

Instead of going the way that most recent remakes and remasters have gone, EA Motive opted to keep the Dead Space Remake strictly for next-gen consoles and the PC. The result is a very well optimized experience that looks and sounds amazing for all supported platforms. Not only does the Ishimura look and sound amazing, it also manages to stay familiar for fans of the original game.

Intensity Director is Survival Horror Done Right

Dead Space Remake - Intensity Director

Compared to the original game, the Dead Space Remake has players on their toes for majority of the playthrough. This is largely thanks to the brand new Intensity Director that switches up your experience as you move from room to room aboard the Ishimura.

From more enemy spawns, malfunctioning lights, quarantine scenarios, and even ambient sound and fog spawns, this new stress-management engine makes playing the Dead Space Remake from start to finish a constantly terrifying experience.

Remake Gameplay Mechanics Take Their Cue from Dead Space 2 and 3

Everything done right in both Dead Space 2 and 3 was adapted by EA Motive and added to the Dead Space Remake. The result is a graphically remastered classic with the polished gameplay mechanics of modern titles - the best of both worlds when considering remakes.

Gone are the tiresome zero-g sequences and clunky PC port shenanigans of the 2008 Dead Space. In their place is a remake whose gameplay still feels familiar to returning players, while still managing to stay fresh for new fans of the survival horror genre.

Cons of the Dead Space Remake

In-Game UI Feels a Bit Clunky on PC

Dead Space Remake - PC UI

While it runs and plays beautifully on the PC, the in-game UI Dead Space Remake still feels like it was designed with controller input in mind. If you're a PC player, you may want to make the switch from mouse and keyboard simply because navigating the UI requires you to take your hands off the mouse to confirm certain prompts.

Not to worry though as this does not really affect gameplay all that much. However, it can get a bit nerve wracking to have your hand off of the mouse while managing your inventory in the middle of a terrifying environment.

Gameplay and Graphics Bugs

While majority of Dead Space Remake players have been to play the game bug-free, there are still a fair bit of game-breaking bugs and performance issues that prevent others from progressing or playing the game. If you plan to play this game on older hardware, be prepared to encounter some of the well-documented ones like vanishing power cells and random FPS drops.

All Known Bugs and Exploits

Is the Dead Space Remake (2023) Worth Buying?

Absolutely, Since It is Arguably Better Than the Original

The Dead Space Remake has been an absolute gem to play as it sets itself apart from some of the more recent remasters and remakes that are hitting the AAA market. Rather than a simple graphical overhaul, the remake is arguably better than the original on all fronts - so much so that it feels like a must-buy for players looking to play Dead Space for the first time.

Casual Players Can Still Enjoy the Game in Story Mode

If you are a fan of horror but not an avid survival horror player, then there's still a place for you in the Dead Space Remake. With a brand new Story Mode difficulty setting, players can still experience terror without having to contend with dying over and over again. If anything, the game feels like a high production, interactive horror movie when played in Story Mode.
