Challus Mercer's Backstory

Career

One of the medical officers on board the USG Ishimura, Dr. Challus Mercer, was a devoted Unitologist who bordered on fanaticism. After the Ishimura was compromised and the infection spread, Mercer developed a maniacal obsession with the Necromorphs.

According to Mercer, the Necromorph infection represented the advancement of humanity, and its capacity to reanimate decaying flesh represented life beyond death. Terrence Kyne, a colleague physician, developed mistrust for Mercer because he was already exhibiting symptoms of madness before the Necromorph infection started.

Challus Mercer's Role

Second Aegis VII Incident

When the infection spread throughout the ship, Mercer's office in the Medical Deck served as a testing ground for his Necromorph experimentation. He had inscriptions like Make us whole! and Save the Marker! written all over his room, as well as Marker symbols and a floor drawing of the Marker. He also had signs that said, To join is to survive.

The Encounter

Isaac finally encountered Mercer in Chemistry Lab when retrieving the poison capsule. He releases the Hunter to attack Isaac, trapping him within the lab, and attempts to persuade Isaac that the Necromorphs are the next stage in evolution and the salvation of humanity.

He is seen later attempting to convince Isaac to quit and let Necromorphs murder him when they ambush Isaac in the intensive care unit. Shortly before they enter the room, he departs and locks the door once more.

Unitologist Meets His Maker

Mercer checked on the beast to ensure it had been destroyed after Isaac Clarke used the Executive Shuttle's engines to burn up the Hunter. Before turning to the Marker and pleading with it to start the Convergence Event immediately, he became furious and insulted Isaac. Mercer was instead pulled down to the cargo hold with the Marker by a huge tentacle. He most likely passed away from being dragged and squashed.
