Zach Hammond's Backstory

Prior Career to the Ishimura Mission

Zach was the chief security officer of the USG Kellion and the leader of the whole operation involving the USG Ishimura. As a crew member of a shuttle owned by the Concordance Extraction Corporation, it can be assumed that Chen is employed by the corporation.

Before the events aboard the USG Ishimura in the original game, there is no established history given to Zach.

Zach Hammond's Role

Landing on the USG Ishimura

As the Chief Security Officer of the USG Kellion, Zach Hammond was tasked with leading the operation aboard the USG Ishimura. When Hammond and his team tried to establish communication with the crew members of the Ishimura, the pilots of the Kellion lost control of the ship. They began to descend towards the interior of the planet-cracker vessel.

After the unfortunate crash landing, Hammond led the crew toward the inner workings of the Ishimura. When the crew tried to learn what befell the planet-cracker vessel and its passengers, they were suddenly ambushed by unknown creatures. After surviving the encounter, Hammond continued with the mission and led Isaac to restore the systems aboard the ship.

Mission Gone Wrong

While Isaac was purging Wheezers found in the Hydroponics Deck, Hammond suddenly revealed himself through a communications log and disclosed that he was searching for survivors on the crew deck. He added that the crew deck was crawling with Unitologists and that the Marker was currently placed in the area.

The Last Stand

After the USM Valor crashed into the Ishimura, Hammond suggested they acquire the vessel's singularity core with Isaac's help. As Hammond reunites with Isaac at the location of the singularity core aboard the Valor, he encounters the Necromorph that was once Chen.

To help Isaac retrieve the singularity core, Hammond sacrifices himself by restraining the Necromorph and pushing it towards the containment field of the core.

As a result of his selfless act, the containment field exploded and eradicated both Hammond and his security officer. It paved the way for Isaac to safely acquire the singularity core and use it to escape the USG Ishimura.
