Dead Space Remake (2023) Ending Explained

Isaac's Hallucinations

In the ending of Dead Space, we see a horrifying sight of Nicole jump on Isaac with killing intent.

That Nicole, and all Nicoles seen throughout the game except for the video that Isaac plays, are all Hallucinations.

Simply put, Isaac did not die as he will still live on to witness more horrors in Dead Space 2 & 3.

A Detailed Perspective

From the start of the game, Isaac's main reason for going into the Ishimura is to find Nicole.

Although not confirmed as Isaac does not speak in the original game, it seems as if the early hallucinations of Nicole are believed to be real by Isaac given the fact that he follows her orders or mission objectives.

In the final chapter of the game, Isaac learns, as well as we do, that Nicole has died. This is confirmed in the ending of Nicole's video transmission to Isaac.

One factor that explains the ending as well as the hallucinations, is the marker's influence on Isaac.

This gives us a perspective on how the marker affects people, by feeding on their loved memories and hitting them with despair, resulting in dementia that apparently leads to taking their own lives.

Another factor that explains Nicole's haunting image in Isaac's hallucinations, is revealed in Dead Space 2.

In the opening cutscene of Dead Space 2, it is revealed that Isaac supported or pushed Nicole into working aboard the Ishimura.

The gory sight of Nicole as a hallucination, is the marker feeding on Isaac's guilt as he blames himself for Nicole's death.

Which is why in Dead Space 2, the hallucination of Nicole tries to kill Isaac, but the screen flashes and we see Isaac trying to take his own life.

Conclusion

The ending of Dead Space signals the start of Isaac's amplified hallucinations influenced by the Marker feeding on Isaac's grief over Nicole's death.

This ultimately resulted in Isaac's complete mental breakdown, which takes us to the beginning of Dead Space 2 — where our protagonist winds up in an asylum three years after the events of the original game.
