Benjamin Mathius' Backstory

Mission

The only thing that is known about Mathius's early life is that he was a highly regarded Unitologist and ship captain working for the Concordance Extraction Corporation and was given the task of conveying Marker 3A to the Church after being removed from Aegis VII. When the USG Ishimura was on its final cycle of service, Mathius was posted there as its captain, and other devoted Unitologists, including Terrence Kyne, Challus Mercer, and Warren Eckhardt, to complete his goal.

Mathius was mainly interested in the Marker's retrieval and intended to bring it aboard for research during his tenure as the Ishimura's captain. After reaching Aegis VII and learning of the colonists' strange and unusual behavior and the rising death toll, Mathius adopted a strict stance on restricting contact with the colony. He didn't want whatever was causing it to spread to the ship because he feared it would obstruct his mission to recover the Marker.

Additionally, he banned all outgoing communications to keep his employees from contacting the company. When Kyne questioned Mathius about the Marker's ability to affect colonist behavior, Mathius convinced the physician that the risk was worthwhile.

Mathius' Fate

Due to the Marker's influence and devotion to the Church, Mathius grew increasingly unpredictable. Kyne ordered crew members Chic and White to restrain him while the doctor gave him a sedative after determining that he was unsuitable for active duty and removing him from command. Dr. Kyne inserted the drug into Mathius' eye while he resisted, killing him. It is unclear whether Dr. Kyne did this accidentally or on purpose. White took over as captain of the Ishimura in Mathius's absence.
