A tamed cat will sleep near your bed when you rest. Upon waking their is a chance that the Cat will leave you a gift around the area of the bed. A cat cannot give you a gift if it is unable to sleep near your bed. Note that even if you have tamed multiple cats, you will only receive one gift each time.

Swamp Hut | Village |
Cats tend to spawn in Villages. As long as there are enough Villagers and Beds, it doesn't matter if the Village is naturally occurring or made by the player.
Cats will move around the general area that the players is located unless they are commanded to sit. Even if the player is atacked by a mob, Cats will not assist in attacking that mob.
Stray cats will often run away from the player when approached, which can make taming them somewhat difficult.
Creepers tend to avoid Cats, making Cats a good mob to tame if you are having trouble dealing with them. This characteristics also makes cats a staple in many Creeper Farms.
