How to Find the Deep Dark

How to Find the Deep Dark

Reach Negative Y Altitude

The Deep Dark biome can be found deep inside caves when the altitude is below zero, so keep exploring caves until you get to negative Y axis. If you don't have your coordinates on, simply dig down until you find Deepslate. That's when you'll know you're under negative Y axis.

The Deep Dark biome is characterized by the sparkling dark blue blocks that surround it, so it's easy to determine once you've found the biome. You'll also hear shrieking sounds from the Sculk Shrieker and the Sculk Sensor so keep an ear on that as well.

Go On Spectator Mode

If you're on Java and have cheats on in your world, you can simply go on spectator mode and go underground to find the Deep Dark biome. To do this, simply type "/gamemode spectator" in the command line to switch from your current game mode to spectator mode.

Locate the Biome

You can also locate the biome via a command! Simply type "/locate biome minecraft:deep_dark" in the command line to get the biome's coordinates. Afterwards, you can either go there by foot or teleport yourself using the command "/tp @s " followed by the coordinates of the biome.

The Deep Dark biome is home to the Sculk Block, Sculk Catalyst, Sculk Sensor, and the Sculk Shrieker. The Sculk Catalyst generates Sculk Blocks when a mob dies within 8 blocks from it. These Sculk Blocks will then have a chance to spawn a Sculk Sensor or a Sculk Shrieker. When the latter senses any kind of movement, it will alert a Sculk Shrieker nearby, which then lets out a signal to spawn a Warden.

True to its name, the biome is generally dark because of the blocks that surround it, making it very difficult to see. The good thing is no other mobs spawn in the biome so it is generally safe unless you accidentally spawn a Warden.

Deep Dark Structures

Ancient City

All Structures
Ancient City

The Ancient City is the only structure that can generate inside the Deep Dark biome. It's a massive underground city that is surrounded by Sculk. There are plenty of chests to loot here and you can even find skeleton skulls lying around in the structure.

You can also get soul sand and candles here If you'd like. Don't have enough wool? You can mine those that are scattered around the city!

Warden MinecraftWarden

Deep Dark is home to the Warden - a hostile but blind mob that will kill anything on its way once it senses their vibrations.

Once it spawns, it lets out a scream and the player will be able to hear its heartbeat through the walls underground.

No other mobs spawn in this biome except for the Warden.

Deep Dark Tips and Tricks

Bring Lots of Night Vision Potions

Player view without using a Potion of Night Vision.

Same view of the player, but after using the potion.

It can get pretty dark in the Deep Dark biome so it is recommended to craft plenty of Night Vision potions before going there. This will help you see a lot better when exploring and sneak past the Warden easier.

Bring Lots of Hoes

Most blocks in the Deep Dark biome can be effectively mined with a hoe. To traverse the biome safely, use a hoe and get rid of all the Sculks in your way. Sculk Blocks also give XP when mined so it's a win!

Bring Plenty of Wool

Wool and Night Vision.png

Walking on wool masks vibrations and movements so it's a great idea to bring lots of wool blocks if you're planning to go to the Deep Dark biome. If your movements cannot be heard, no Warden will spawn and traversing the biome will generally be a lot safer.

Crouch

Alternatively, you can just crouch when you see a Sculk Sensor nearby. Doing so makes less sound, therefore you won't trigger the sensor and it won't be able to alert any Sculk Shrieker nearby.

Do Not Fight the Warden

Warden Attacking Nearby Spawns

The Warden is the new terrifying mob players can encounter in the Deep Dark biome. They are very strong and bulky. Fighting one is not worth it because it will take a lot of time and it can kill you very quickly. When it dies, it will only give you a Sculk Catalyst and nothing more.

Instead of killing Wardens, we recommend sneaking past it by crouching or walking on wool.
