How to Get Looting

Obtain using Enchanting Tables

The most common way to obtain Looting is through an Enchanting Table. You'll need XP and Lapis Lazuli to enchant an item.

Use Bookshelves to increase enchantment levels

Placing bookshelves around the Enchanting Table will increase the possible enchantment levels of an item. There must be one block of air between a bookshelf and the Enchanting Table for this to work.

Obtain by Fishing

Fishing - Minecraft
Head out into open water and use your Fishing Rod to catch items with Looting enchantments. The Luck of the Sea enchant will increase your chances of catching enchanted items.

Loot from Chests

You'll find Looting in Treasure Chests in structures and dungeons around the world. Make sure you're properly equipped with armor and weapons since these areas will be infested with Mobs.

Trade with Villagers

You'll be able to trade items with villagers to obtain Looting. Librarians will be your best bet since you can trade Emeralds for enchantments even at Novice levels.

You'll have to level up other Villager types to obtain their enchanted stock.

How to Use Looting

Higher Chance of Rare Drops

Looting - Minecraft Enchantment
Since Looting increases the number of items mobs drop, this, in turn, increases the chance for them to have rare drops. This is especially great for farming Ender Pearls from Endermen, but will also benefit you when killing regular mobs such as Zombies that can drop Iron Ingots.

Gathering rare resources is made much easier and less time-consuming.

Ranged Weapons can still Benefit from Looting

While Looting can only be applied to Swords, this does not mean you have to force yourself to always use it to reap its benefits. When using ranged weapons, switch to your Sword before the projectile kills an enemy to get the Looting effect.

For example, after throwing a Trident at an enemy, immediately equip your Sword before it lands and kills them so that the enchantment will take effect.
