How to Get Respiration

Obtain using Enchanting Tables

The most common way to obtain Respiration is through an Enchanting Table. You'll need XP and Lapis Lazuli to enchant an item.

Use Bookshelves to increase enchantment levels

Placing bookshelves around the Enchanting Table will increase the possible enchantment levels of an item. There must be one block of air between a bookshelf and the Enchanting Table for this to work.

Obtain by Fishing

Fishing - Minecraft
Head out into open water and use your Fishing Rod to catch items with Respiration enchantments. The Luck of the Sea enchant will increase your chances of catching enchanted items.

Loot from Chests

You'll find Respiration in Treasure Chests in structures and dungeons around the world. Make sure you're properly equipped with armor and weapons since these areas will be infested with Mobs.

Trade with Villagers

You'll be able to trade items with villagers to obtain Respiration. Librarians will be your best bet since you can trade Emeralds for enchantments even at Novice levels.

You'll have to level up other Villager types to obtain their enchanted stock.

How to Use Respiration

Stay Underwater for Longer

Respiration - Minecraft Enchantment

Respiration Enchantment Level Underwater Breathing Time (in Seconds)
I 30
II 45
III 60

With the Respiration enchantment, you can venture the depths of the oceans for much longer before needing to resurface. This is extremely helpful for exploring Ocean Monuments, as well as underwater ruins and shipwrecks.

Enchant a Turtle Shell

Enchanting a Turtle Shell with Respiration lets you stay underwater for an additional 10 seconds since this helmet grants you Water Breathing for that time. This gives you a maximum of 70 seconds underwater.

Pair with Depth Strider Boots

To have a better time exploring underwater, pair your helmet with boots that have the Depth Strider enchantment. Depth Strider's speed combined Respiration's breathing time will let you reach unexplored parts of the ocean more easily.
