Asta, Herta, Trailblazer (Fire), Natasha, Yukong, Lynx, Trailblazer (Imaginary) , March 7th (Imaginary), and Xueyi are the best free characters to build as soon as you get them. These characters can help you get through most of the content without struggle.

March, Qingque, and Serval are good characters to invest in thanks to having a decent shield and can deal a good amount of damage respectively.

While it's fine to build both the Trailblazer and Dan Heng, do keep in mind that you will attain much better characters to invest your materials in.

"All" free characters, but you don't list the free 5 Star selectors. Also even if not available anymore but Dr Ratio was also free

I find it funny that my strongest free character is Dan Heng. He (aside from Gepard) is my most used character. Then again it does depend on the build you do.
