Evade, Dodge, and Counter are different defensive options available in Code Vein 2. Check out which of these three are the most viable option during combat and the benefits of each!
List of Contents
Evading or dodging attacks allows you to completely avoid taking damage. However, some enemies perform combos, and their follow up attacks may hit you as soon as you finish your dodge animation. Dodging also lets you reposition (preferably closer to the enemy) so you can deal damage as soon as an opening appears.
There are three dodge levels. The first is a sidestep dodge, which has the fastest animation, allowing you to recover quickly. You can achieve this if the burden of all attributes is less than half. The second is a normal roll, which is the standard dodge, and the third is a heavy roll, which is the slowest of the three. Your dodge will become a heavy roll if you have two or more overburdened attributes.
Countering, or parrying, is a high-risk, high-reward action that disrupts an enemy's attack and provides a small window for you to deal damage. Parrying incoming attacks stops combos, which gives you room to breathe. Counters are quite hard to pull off, as they require high skill to properly incorporate into your combo.
Guard is the safest defensive option of the three, as it allows you to block incoming attacks and take reduced damage. Some defensive formae provide complete protection against certain attacks, negating all damage while you have your guard up.
Continuously blocking attacks will deplete your stamina, causing you to become staggered and vulnerable for a brief moment. You can perform a perfect guard by timing your block with an enemy's attack to reduce the stamina consumed. Some shields inflict status ailments when you perform a perfect guard. For example, the Shield of Stupor inflicts the Stone status ailment when you successfully perfect guard an attack.
