Wuchang Combat Guide

Understand the Damage Types

List of Weapon Types
Longswords Longswords Axes Axes Spears Spears
One-Handed Swords One-Handed Swords Dual Blades Dual Blades
List of Resistances
Blight Blight Poise Break Poise Break Burn Burn Frostbite Frostbite
Corruption Corruption Despair Despair Paralysis Paralysis

There are various damage types throughout the game that each Weapon can deal, such as Slash, Blunt, Stab, Feathering, Magic, Fire, and Lightning. Furthermore, your Armors also have Resistances against status buildups such as Blight, Poise Break, Burn, Frostbite, Corruption, Despair, and Paralysis.

Certain Bosses have a weakness that you can capitalize on, such as Soulwood being weak to Burn. Try to use weapons that can exploit their weaknesses to give you an advantage.

Adjust Your Equipment Against Bosses

Additionally, some Bosses also have a specific damage type they specialize on such as Lu Bingzhang inflicting Corrupted and Honglan executing Slash and Stab attacks. Make sure you adjust your equipment to match the damage types of your opponents, which will help you survive throughout the fight.

Skyborn Might is Your Mana Points

For spell casters and Weapon and Discipline skills, Skyborn Might is your main resource for increasing the potency of your skills and casting various Spells.

The most common way of obtaining Skyborn Might is by triggering Shimmer as you perfectly dodge attacks, so make sure to dodge often while also consuming your Skyborn Might stacks whenever possible.

Skyborn Might Explained

Dodge Using Alacrity, Fleetness, and Shimmer

Manually dodging is not the only way you can avoid attacks. Shimmer is a default effect that provides Skyborn Might stacks whenever you perfectly dodge an attack. Furthermore, certain Skills and Spells have additional effects attached to them, such as Alacrity, which allows you to dodge an attack while casting a Spell, and Fleetness, which also enables you to dodge an attack during your Skill.

Make Use of Swift Draw

Swift Draw allows you seamlessly switch your main weapon with your secondary weapon while also executing the secondary weapon's Weapon Skill. This can open up various unique combos depending on your choice of weapons, so make sure to experiment and try out other weapon types.

Clashing and Deflecting

Clashing and Deflecting

Clashing allows you to deflect most incoming damage during your attacks as you time it with enemy attacks. Certain weapons have this trait when you slot them in the Impetus Repository, so try to take these nodes if you plan on clashing most of the time.

On the other hand, Deflecting allows you to completely negate incoming damage by blocking attacks using specific Weapon or Discipline skills. There are also various additional effects you can get for Deflecting at the Impetus Repository, such as gaining Skyborn Might or exposing their Vulnerability to stagger them for openings.

Do note that punches and kicks cannot be Clashed and Deflected, so we recommend dodging these types of attacks.

Use Temperance and Other Useful Items

Use Temperance and Other Useful Items

We highly recommend configuring your Item Slots and equipping useful items such as Temperance for applying buffs to your weapon, Throwables for builds without ranged options, and Healing items for cases where you run out of Manna Vases.

Equip Spells Regardless of Your Build

Equip Spells Regardless of Your Build

Even if you are a melee user, we still highly recommend equipping a Spell on your spell slots as they are free ranged options as long as you have Skyborn Might. They can also be used to weave in combos together with your melee attacks, depending on which Spell you plan on using.

Manage Your Health and Stamina

Manage Your Health and Stamina

The best ways to manage your health are by upgrading your Manna Vase, equipping recovery Pendants and Benedictions, taking Vitality nodes in your Impetus Repository, and using consumable recovery items. Additionally, you can also equip the Bone Needle - Leech on your Temperance to provide you with a life leech effect whenever you attack for a certain duration.

As for stamina management, we recommend equipping stamina Pendants and Benedictions, taking Endurance nodes in your skill tree, and using stamina consumables such as Lantern Fruits and Soft Rush Flowers.

Advanced Fighting Tips

Maintain High Madness to Activate Certain Effects

In the Impetus Repository, there are a ton of nodes that provide additional effects when you above a certain threshold of Madness. These include effects such as gaining Skyborn Might, more potent Swift Draws, and increased Feathering Attack Power, to name a few.

Additionally, you can keep maintaining your Madness by either defeating humanoid enemies or using the Maddening Incense so you can consistently keep the effects active. Do note that the Inner Demon will spawn at 90% Madness if ever you die and have to retrieve your lost Red Mercuries.

Increase FOV on PC

For PC players, we recommend increasing your FOV to 85 so you can get a wider perspective of your surroundings. This is useful for exploring to spot enemies and taking on Boss fights that have high mobility.

Summon NPC Allies in Boss Fights

Summon NPC Allies in Boss Fights

There are a few specific Bosses that allow you to summon NPCs to help you throughout the fight, such as Nian when facing the Corrupted Priest. You can summon them by using the Bone Whistle during the Boss fight that you can get from either Nian or by purchasing it from Tao Qing.

Stack Skyborn Might before Boss Fights

Stack Skyborn Might before Boss Fights

When taking on difficult Bosses, there will be times that there are enemies along the way to the runback of the boss area. Use them for gaining Skyborn Might by either dodging or executing certain attacks so you can be more prepared as you take on the Boss again.

Keep in mind that you can also use a Plumed Branch to gain Skyborn Might for cases where there are no enemies along the way.

Skyborn Might Explained

Dodge Towards Attacks

Lastly, we highly recommend dodging towards attack since this allows you to get more iframes and maintain your distance with the enemy to execute powerful moves quickly. Unlike previous soulslike games, Wuchang: Fallen Feathers has a very forgiving iframe window for their dodges, so make sure to use this as much as you can.

Dual Wield Elements via Certain Nodes

Dual Wield Elements via Certain Nodes

Certain weapons can have two elements when equipped with a Discipline skill that has an elemental variant and infused with a Temperance of a different element. One example would be the Whirlwind - Variant II, which inflicts Poise Break damage and then infusing your Axe with Frostbite or Lightning using your Temperance to be able to inflict 2 elements for that Discipline Skill.

These can all be found in the Impetus Repository skill tree, so make sure to take your time finding the right nodes for your build.

Impetus Repository Skill Tree Guide

Execute Plunging Attacks to Obliterate

The level design for Wuchang: Fallen Feathers offers a series of diverse pathways that can lead to high platforms. Use this to your advantage by dropping onto enemies from above and executing a Plunging Attack to instantly trigger an Obliterate for huge damage.

Walk Behind Unsuspecting Enemies

When approaching unaware enemies, make sure you slowly walk towards them to execute a charged heavy attack and trigger Obliterate for burst damage. This can be useful for eliminating powerful enemies that can be annoying to deal with as the fight drags on.

Equip Two Same Type Weapons

Equipping two weapons of the same type allows you to take advantage of the Weapon Mastery upgrades for that specific weapon type. Furthermore, if you equip two of the same weapon such as double Halberds, you can then use the Swift Draw mechanic to execute the weapon skill while also using additional effects related to Swift Draws.

Perform Spells and Skill Extensions

Certain spells and weapon skills such as Echo of Dhutanga and Spinning Kick allow you to perform a follow-up attack by using it again in conjuction with the spell or skill. Do note that not all spells or skills have this effect so make sure to read up on their descriptions and button inputs to gain a deeper understanding of the spell or skill itself.
