The Mistress has higher mitigation to Stab and Blunt attacks, so using Slashes is the recommended approach against her.
How to Beat Mistress of the Night Huang Yan
- Cheesing Method on First Phase
- Equip Blunt, Frostbite, and Corruption Resistances
- Opt for a Spell Build
- Opening Are Usually Before Her Attacks End
- Increase the FOV to Track Her Projectiles
Cheesing Method on First Phase
For this cheese method to work, the Mistress needs to teleport to your location at the start while you're positioned in the corner of the door, then bait her to you. Once she's at the edge, continuously attack her to apply crowd control, like brief staggers. Keep this up until she's at half health, as her second phase turns her into an Arctic Fox, allowing her to easily get unstuck.
Equip Blunt, Frostbite, and Corruption Resistances
The Mistress of the Night is a spell-focused boss, with most of her attacks capable of inflicting Frostbite and Corruption buildup. Her blunt attacks come from her frost-infused kicks, so equipping armor and consuming items that increase mitigation and resistance for these will help you survive longer.

The Mistress keeps her distance half of the time, so you can opt for a Spell Build, like the Magic Shortsword Build or the Flame Spear Build, that can reach her from afar. You'll still have to stay alert, since she can teleport close and deal melee damage with frostbite buildup.
Openings Are Usually Before Her Attacks End

| 1 | She becomes stationary for a bit when her fox lets out an icy breath in front. |
| 2 | She is also stationary whenever she taps her lantern and lets out a red shockwave. |
| 3 | The Mistress floats in the air, summoning a giant homing orb that fires projectiles. She's stationary during this move, but watch out for the corruption projectiles heading your way. |
| 4 | Though her openings are at the beginning of the attack, you can also get an attack in during one of her footwork moves when she raises her bent knee, granted that you dodge the incoming attack. |
You can usually land a hit in the openings right before her corruption attacks end, but doing so risks getting struck by one of her moves. There are also openings before she executes her frost kicks, granted you successfully dodge her attack.
Increase the Field of View to Track Her Projectiles
Increasing the Field of View (FOV) will help you keep track of the corruption-infused projectiles she summons around the room. This way, you can dodge the projectiles while still focusing on the Mistress.

Her initial attack patterns include a variety of moves that make up her entire kit, dealing blunt, frostbite, or corruption damage.

| Twirling Kicks |
The Mistress raises her bent knee while inhaling ice from her pipe, then performs two quick frost-infused kicks. When you see her begin the initial animation, move away to avoid the first kick, then dodge the second. |
| Frost Stomp |
The Mistress raises her legs and stomps on the ground, producing a frosty mist upon impact. Dodge away from her when you see her executing this move. It's usually the final attack in her footwork combo. |
| Aerial Stomp |
The Mistress performs the initial animation for her footwork attacks, then jumps and stomps down on your location. Dodge only when she's about to land, as dodging during her jump will likely get you hit upon her landing. |
| Front Kick and Stomp |
The Mistress performs the initial animation of her footwork attacks, and does a front kick followed by a stomp. Move away from her as soon as she begins animation to avoid the front kick, then dodge the stomp. |
| Teleport |
While not an attack itself, the Mistress uses teleportation to get close to you, and she may immediately perform one of her footwork attacks without the usual animation. Keep the camera locked on her to track her position and react quickly to dodge any incoming attack. |
| Frosty Breath |
She gently taps the head of her arctic fox scarf, releasing a frosty breath in front of her. Dodge to your left or right to avoid it. |
| Corruption Orbs |
Huang Yan looks at her pipe and her purple lantern, then fires five corruption orbs in a cone-shaped spread twice. It's best to keep your distance, as getting hit by all the orbs can result in an instant death. You can also dodge to the sides to avoid them. |
| Corruption Projectiles |
Huang Yan points her smoking pipe at you and summons objects that fires projectiles in your direction. Keep moving to avoid most of them, though it isn't guaranteed that you'll be able to dodge all of them, especially since you'll need to stay focused on the Mistress throughout the whole fight. |
| Giant Homing Orb |
She releases a giant homing orb of corruption that fires small projectiles as it heads toward you. Keep your distance from the main orb and dodge the incoming projectiles until the orb misses you and disappears. |
| Crimson Blast |
She taps her lantern with her smoking pipe and lets out a blast that deals damage to an area around her. Simply dodge away from her once she taps her lantern. |
Added Attack Patterns at 50% HP
New attacks are added when The Mistress's health drops to about a half, which is also indicated by the ability to transform into an arctic fox.

The Mistress transforms into a giant Arctic Fox resembling her scarf, hovering in the air before lunging her entire body toward you. This attack is often followed by her footwork attacks, so stay alert and be ready to dodge a second time. |
