Aim your throwable Items using the Camera (Right Stick) in Mario Kart World. See how you can aim with your camera, as well as a list of items you can aim at your rivals below!
Adjust your camera angle with your Right Stick and hold that camera angle before throwing your Item.
It is best to align your target with the center of your camera angle as items are thrown in the direction where the camera faces.

The Switch 2 Pro Controller and the Charging Joy-Con 2 Grip both have mappable extra buttons. You can map these extra buttons to better suit your preferences in aiming behind you.
Items that will normally go forward when pressing the item button (L / ZL) can instead be thrown behind you by holding back (down) on the left stick and pressing the item button (L / ZL). However, unlike the method discussed above, this will throw the item directly behind you, and it cannot be aimed with the right stick.
Holding the X button will let you view what's directly behind you. This is a good maneuver to check if any enemy is trying to draft off you or target you with a weapon, and can be used to aim a throwable item by seeing what is directly behind you.

Using the right stick to aim and throw items gives you more freedom with where you throw, but throwing backwards is very useful when an opponent is right behind you. This can be done with all throwable items, including Red Shells.
Red Shells cannot be aimed as they are programmed to always target the racers in front of you. However, you can still throw them behind you by holding down on the left stick and pressing L / ZL. Note that when doing so, they will not target another racer, and will only go directly backwards.
