How to Unlock Rainbow Road
Beat All Grand Prix Cups to Unlock the Special Cup
To unlock the Rainbow Road, you need to finish all Grand Prix Cups and unlock the Special Cup!
To unlock the Special Cup, you must complete the preceding 7 Cups in the Grand Prix with each Cup consisting of 4 courses. The speed (CC) or ranking does not matter and it will count as long as you clear the Cup.

Grand Prix Guide and How to Win
Rainbow Road Map and Shortcuts
Shortcut 1: Lap 2
In Lap 2 of the course, following the initial section in the water, you'll see a ramp straight ahead, to the left of the road curving off to the right. Use a Mushroom to speed through the offroad and jump off the ramp back onto the road.
Shortcut 2: Lap 3
In Lap 3, when the road curves sharply to the left, drift hard for a sharp turn to stay on the inside curve of the road, and use a Mushroom at the same time as you release the Mini-Turbo to launch across the offroad into the ramp.
Shortcut 3: Lap 4
In Lap 4, when the road curves sharply to the left, drift to stay on the inside curve of the road and use a Mushroom to cross the patch of offroad.
Can You Do Free Roam in Rainbow Road?
Rainbow Road is Inaccessible in Free Roam
Rainbow Road can only be accessed in the Special Cup from Grand Prix Mode, or as an individual track in VS Mode.
Because Rainbow Road is visited via a special road from Peach Stadium existing only as part of Peach Stadium's Special Cup track, players can't reach the track normally outside of this mode.
It's still possible that Rainbow Road will open up in Free Roam through a hidden unlock condition or as a DLC update in the future. We'll update this page if any additional information is found!
Free Roam Mode Guide and How to Start
Rainbow Road Course Information
Part of the Special Cup
Rainbow Road is the last course in the Special Cup. You'll have to clear all other Cups first before you can access the Special Cup and reach the last Course to unlock Rainbow Road.
Mario Kart World Iteration
Rainbow Road is considered the most challenging course in every Mario Kart entry. Most Mario Kart entries have their iteration of the Rainbow Road.
Mario Kart World is expected to have one as well, though there is no information about it at the moment.
Classic Rainbow Roads
The previous games' Rainbow Roads were available in Mario Kart 8 as part of its Booster Course Pass DLC.
It is unknown if they will also be available in Mario Kart World as part of its base game or as a DLC like in Mario Kart 8.
