Collect 20 Coins
Coins provide a permanent speed increase to your kart, which will continue for as long as you hold them. It is best to aim for the maximum coin cap of 20 and strive to maintain it by not getting hit or falling off the course.
Master the Track
If you want to stay ahead, you need to know the best racing lines to keep your lead. You'll also want to know where the item and coin spawns are, as well as the track's shortcuts.
The best way to practice tracks is in the time trial mode, where you can master see other people's ghosts and how they approach shortcuts in different courses.

However, there are some potential drawbacks to consider, although these can be mitigated through smart play and strategic use of items.
Should You Be the Frontrunner?
During the Final Lap, Yes
With track knowledge and skill, securing first place just before or during the final lap is often the best approach. Mario Kart's item mechanics introduce an element of luck, but you can reduce randomness by taking the lead early, rather than relying on a perfect (and unlikely) opportunity to steal first place at the last moment.
However, if your lead isn't as strong as you'd like, haven't seen a blue mushroom the whole race, or lack defensive items, adjusting your tactics may be necessary. Alternative strategies, such as bagging to get good items at the middle ranks, could give you a better shot at securing victory.
