List of Contents

The core Mario Kart game mode returns as the Grand Prix! Race against the CPU or other players in different Cups, which consist of four courses each.

| Rank | Points Awarded | Rank | Points Awarded |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | 15 | 10th to 12th | 6 |
| 2nd | 12 | 13th to 15th | 5 |
| 3rd | 10 | 16th to 18th | 4 |
| 4th to 5th | 9 | 19th to 21st | 3 |
| 6th to 7th | 8 | 22nd to 23rd | 2 |
| 8th to 9th | 7 | 24th | 1 |
You can earn points based on your placement after finishing a course, and you can win a Cup by having the most points after all four courses.

You also have to race across the World Map to reach the next course in a Cup, which makes each Cup more challenging.
There are 8 Cups in Grand Prix, and the last one, the Special Cup, can be unlocked by completing the first seven cups!

You can earn stars by winning in each cup and earning a certain number of points. However, getting 3 stars in all cups does not grant a reward.

Additionally, when you get a certain amount of stars at a higher difficulty, you will get stars for the lower engine classes as well.
For instance, getting a star on Mirror Mode, the hardest difficulty, will give you a star for 150cc and below!

A character is unlocked when you complete a cup in the Grand Prix, except for the Special Cup. There are no CC, ranking, or star requirements. You just need to complete the race.

Once you beat all of the Cups, you will unlock the Special Cup, which includes the fan-favorite course Rainbow Road!

You will get stickers once you complete the Special Cup for the first time on any speed and ranking! Other than that, there are no rewards for completing this mode even if you three star every difficulty.
When you collect coins while racing on different courses, new Karts can be unlocked, so make sure to pick up as many coins as possible on the way to the finish line!
Clearing the Grand Prix Cups is one of the requirements to unlock Mirror Mode, with clearing the hidden Special Cup being the last requirement. The are more requirements to meet, however, such as collecting Free Roam Collectibles and completing all the Knockout Tour Rallies.

If you're having a hard time with 150cc, you can play on 100cc or 50cc as well! You will still unlock the characters and the Special Cup if you play on a lower engine class.
Also, you can still get stars for the Cups if you play on a lower engine class, but you will not get stars for 150cc.
First, it's important to learn the basic techniques, such as drifting and jumping. Other techniques, such as Charge Jumping and Rail Riding will be useful in helping you maneuver through courses as well.

Items are an integral part of the game that can be used offensively or defensively to catch up to your enemies or make sure they stay behind you. New items have been added in this game, so make sure to check them out.
If you want to use shortcuts by going off-road, you can use mushrooms to maintain your speed. Also, if you get hit by a shell, you can use mushrooms to recover and get back into the race!
If you're in first place, it would be better to use your items to prevent your opponents from driving past you instead. So save your bananas and shells in case your opponents want to hit you with items.

For beginners, a character and Kart combination that has good handling is recommended as being unable to make turns can result in time losses. Once you get used to the courses, then you can use a speed-oriented combo to easily drive past your opponents!
