By using the Kamek item, it forces a transformation for everyone in the tracks, with the user being the sole exception. Players who transform into a character that they have not yet unlocked will now have that character unlocked.

Play a Two-Player Splitscreen Game

Step Directions

Play a Local Splitscreen Game With No Coms
Play a local splitscreen game with 2 players (no second player required). Set the COM difficulty to No COM to disable CPU players and choose a course where your desired character can be unlocked.

You can set the Race Count to 32 to skip the final score screen, making repeated runs easier after reaching the hidden time limit. You can always leave early after you get your desired character.

Have P1 Stay Near Item Boxes
Let one of the players, P1 for example, wait behind a group of item boxes while the other player, P2, stops further ahead in a spot where they can transform into their desired character.
Note: The distance between each driver is essential as it influences what items you get, including the Kamek item.

You're too close if you get too many Coins and Bananas, and too far if you're getting Super Stars and Golden Dash Mushrooms.

Break Item Boxes for the Kamek Item
Have P1 break two item boxes. If you didn't get a Kamek, continue to Step 4. If you got the Kamek item, skip to Step 5.

Start Driving the Wrong Way
If you didn't get the Kamek item, use the items you got and start driving the wrong way. After a few seconds, Lakitu will pick you up and reset you to a nearby position. Then repeat Step 3.
Note: Getting picked up by Lakitu is important as it resets the possible items you get. If you don't get Lakitu to reset your position, you'll start getting worse items, making it impossible to get the Kamek item.

Unleash Kamek
Once you get the Kamek item, use it to unleash Kamek's magic to the second player and transform them to your desired Unlockable Character.
Note: Make sure that the player getting transformed is near the center of the track to guarantee Kamek flies over and transforms them.

The most consistent way to get Kamek quickly and farm for specific hard-to-get characters is through a splitscreen VS Race without CPU racers. One player should be positioned at the correct location in your chosen course, while the other continuously opens item boxes behind them until they obtain the Kamek item.

This method typically takes between 30 minutes to an hour, so it's best suited for unlocking rare characters like Fish Bone, which can only be found between Toad Factory and Dry Bones Burnout. If you're aiming for more common unlockable characters, the other methods below may be a more efficient way to spend your time.

Play VS Races in a Specific Course

Faraway Oasis Vs Mode

If you're trying to unlock a fairly common Kamek-unlockable character from a specific course, it's best to spam VS Races on that track until one of your rival racers gets the item and transforms you. Try to always be in the higher ranks and avoid shortcuts so you'll get the best chances of Kamek flying over and transforming you.

Play Grand Prix and Knockout Tour

Knockout Tour Ice Rally

If you're looking for a fun and casual way to farm for Kamek-unlockable characters, the Grand Prix and Knockout Tour game modes are great options. Their nonstop race format speeds up Kamek item farming, making the process more efficient.

However, the downside is that you can't directly control which courses appear in sequence. Because of this, it's best to use this method early in the game, before you've unlocked most of the Kamek-related characters.

Using Kamek will temporarily transform all opponents into the same character. Who they will transform into is completely random.

What Ranking Does Kamek Appear At?

Appears more frequently between 4th and 10th Place

Kamek sometimes appears at the middle ranks, suh as those between 4th and 10th place. It is an effective and powerful item, but not as powerful as Lightning. Still, as it will affect multiple racers, it has a tendency to appear more the further back you are.

Stingby is also unlocked with Kamek but isn't listed anywhere online. Unlocked on Acorn Heights track. Hope this helps someone!
